scope?
      #49222 - 05/02/06 03:56 PM

I am looking to scope my Safari Classic in .375 for Africa. What power do you find the most useful? I will be hunting buffalo and plains game. Or should I set it up for two scopes? I really don't want to shoot much past 200 yards.

I moved this to the African forum, as it is more relevant here than where it was originally posted on one of the "links" pages.

Bushy
I have used my 9,3x74R double rifle for plains game on 3 Safaris to Zim, and also one buff with a Swarovski 1.5-6x42 with the illuminated circle dot reticle.
I can recommend that scope and a S&B 1.5-6x42 with illuminated flash dot reticle that I have on a 308.

At 1.5x you have a very wide field of view, at 6x you can make long shots if necessary. The 42mm objective gives you good light gathering for leopard.

Either one of those scopes would be perfect for an African 375H&H.

One of the scopes already recomended or my choice which is the Swarovdki 1.1x4 with the illuminated reticle. I find the 1.5x6 too large and it makes my rifle awkward.

If you aren't after either hyhena, leopard or lion then the Leupold 1.5x5 has alot to recomend it. It doesn't cut it in low light situations though.

Ozhunter,

I took your advice & just ordered a Schmidt & Bender 1.5-6 x42 Zenith Scope.
I went with the "flash dot #7 reticle". I'll be putting it on a Dakota 375 H&H
I also recently acquired. This should make a good all-around combination for
Africa (at least a good back-up for my 450/400 double).

Cowboy,

I have that exact scope, and am very pleased with it. It will be a great scope for the use you mention.

I have the leupold 1.5-5X20 on a .375 and a .458 lott and like them very well. The .375 Ruger Hawkeye African shoots very well at 200 yards with the 270 grain Hornady. I am vert happy with it. I shouldnt think light gathering would be a big issue hunting buffalo and plains game. Cats would probably be an altogether different matter. I am taking those rifles with me to zimbabwe for buffalo and mixed bag plains game. Best of luck!

On a dangerous game rifle I like the simplicity of a fixed power scope. They are lighter, less cumbersome, and more rugged than their variable powered counterparts. Eye relief is constant and generally better than that of a variable scope. I use a fixed, four power on mine. Each to their own.

Just my .02$ worth.

There's nothing wrong with your choice. I know one of the gun writers, John Sundra, I believe, uses them a lot.

My .338 Winchester has a 6x42 on it. My .375 H&H has a 4x33 on it. And my .458 Winchester has a fixed 2.5x20 mm it. If and when the 2.5 Leupold gives up the ghost (again!), I will most likely replace it with a fixed 1 power Burris. This little scope is an optical engineering marvel. Eye relief is a non-critical 6-24 inches, and there is 160 or so inches of adjustment at 100 yards, thanks to its 1 power design.

Fixed power scopes have a certain qualities that I find alluring. Simplicity, compactness, a minimum of contraptions to screw up, light weight, and an undeniable advantage in toughness over similar variable models.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, they are cheaper too.

I took a 1.5-5 VX-3 on my 404 to Africa for Buff and had no problems. It had the German No 4.
I have since bought a 1.1-4 Khales and put on it.
