Video Stills: My Ele Hunt
      #49215 - 05/02/06 02:01 PM

I've figured out how to play with my DVD software and was studying my elephant hunt in slow mo. It's amazing the details you pick up as you go frame by frame over footage that was mere seconds long.

Here's a photo essay of my cow hunt.

Buzz and the gang and myself have been stalking this cow for awhile in the jess. We've kept the wind in our faces and shifted back and forth looking over the herd as they are feeding. There were two tuskless here but one had a calf, we didn't want her.

We get our girl singled out and opt for various positions. Finally Buzz picks a place and he looks at me and says this is going to be a frontal brain shot. The cow has stepped sideways across a trail with her head in the jess.

We get in close and set up.

She is backing out of the jess here, she heard us set up.

She's in the lane and looking at me and Buzz who is crouched down, Shaun is right behind me running the video. At this point she has not decided what we are.

NOW SHE SEES ME!

She's just decided to come but I fired at the same time. If you buy the video you will see at this point she hitches her head up and starts to step forward.

The shot...POW!

Head's up!

Going.....

Going.....

Down!

We are so focused while performing the hunt to be able and go back and see the "big" picture is fantastic. Things I could see watching the video:

As I watched I could see that the whole time the elephant was moving, from when she backed out of the jess and was looking at me that my barrel followed her every move. All the way to the shot. I was on target, had my spot picked and stayed on it.

I cleared the spent round and closed the bolt only as she hit the ground. Was I too slow?

She was 13 yards away.

In one photo, though these are pretty low resolution, shows the angle and position of her head, both eyes, the zygomatic arches are visable framing the eyes. You can see her focus.

It sure is nice to watch this to be able to evaluate the hunt. I'll be buying the whole thing from Buzz so I can see how everyone else did it.

I personally can't wait to do it again.

Ann

Congratulations, a superb experience and really vivid pictures, we are living your hunt, perhaps more than being on your side or gapeing at Buzz's video.

Fantastic.

Thanks for sharing.

I was watching you shoot your ele only today on Buzz Charlton's film.

Well done. And a one shot kill too. It must have been exciting in the jess that day.

Thanks for posting the stills.

Well done - I especially like that you had barely recovered from the recoil and were already working the bolt, rather than waiting to see the effect of the shot.

Thanks guys, you know seeing the footage is pretty much just as exciting as when I was actually there.

The one photo above where the cow registered what I was just creeps me out! I am used to hunting deer that run away when they spot you. Not something that will hunt you back.

BTW- I make it a habit to reload after each shot no matter on the bench or in the field "just in case!"

Ann you should be congratulated for reloading your bolt action at the shoulder. While watching the DVD I was amazed at how almost everyone using a bolt action fired a shot, brought the rifle down to their waist to work the bolt and watched the elephant. Then raised the rifle for a second shot if needed.

Much much better to practice reloading instantly at the shoulder and stuff the spent case if it is lost!

It seems that I see this a lot on hunting shows -- as you say the much better practice is to cycle the bolt with the rifle at your shoulder. Better yet are those who can top up the magazine without lowering the rifle.

I like to look at the before the shot photo and then the after one to compare where the puff of dust is from the bullet impact to where I would have aimed (given all the time in the world looking at a photo). The after photo has the elephant rocking back a little already from the impact.

Again excellent.

Yes indeed, excellent!
Ann, I know exactly what you mean about how terrific it is to be able to relive the hunt by watching the video footage.
Really good stuff, thanks for sharing it with us.

I still have the original camera tape from the very first kill I filmed on video back in '89 or '90.
I had only owned the camera for a couple of hours and one of my clients took a really nice boar just on sunset at a favourite waterhole in West Queensland which I managed to film.
We played it back in the camera afterwards and it looked so good that we drove to the land owners house and plugged the camera into his TV set and he wanted to keep playing it over and over!

You are right that the video footage can show so many interesting things that took place so fast at the time.

Nice shooting Ann both with rifle and camera!

Erik,

Are you also featured? Seems I remember you did a tuskless as well?

Ann,

I did a tuskless shortly before you, but didn't have it filmed. (see this thread: Tuskless ele in Zim. )

The funny thing is that when I was booking with Buzz/Myles, I was going to go for 2 tuskless cows. But I was informed that there was some blond American woman who had the last one available on Big5s quota reserved, while she was making up her mind to go for it or not.

And as we have seen from your pictures, the blond woman did eventually make up her mind!

I REALLY wanted one more tuskless...

However, I might consider forgiving you one day for "stealing my cow", if you behave nicely!

Thanks for all of the kind words, guys.

You know Erik, I really made a great decision, didn't I! I appreciate you sharing too!

While on my hunt we came accross antoher VERY aggressive tuskless cow the day after I killed mine. I wished there was an extra license as I would have gladly killed her. She was trying to get us and was very determined.

I've got HER on tape too!

Thank you, Dan, you deserve quite a bit of credit. I know I pestered you with plenty of questions and one particular rifle. THANK YOU!

Are you on Buzz's production?

He made the cover? I am totally jealous, Buzz told me I was the only girl on the production. I figured that would give me an edge for the cover. Guess I wasn't pretty enough.

Congrats Dan!
