Just for fun.... Guinea fowl
      #48870 - 02/02/06 04:18 AM

The look on my PH’s face told me that this wasn’t going to be pleasant. We’d flushed a flock of Guinea fowl and the one that we were after had headed for thick cover. We were going to have to go in and pull him out by the beak.

“Well, I guess we’ve given him enough time. Let’s go sort this out,’” my PH said sternly.

I checked my rifle and made sure I had some solids up the sprout in case I had to take a shot at a bad angle. Then I nodded to my PH that I was ready and we started in after him, our tracker leading the way.

We slowly entered the thick bush trying to spot the Guinea before he spotted us. We were creeping forward when suddenly I caught a glimpse of him. He was waiting in ambush for us beneath a large bush.

Robert Ruark once said, “The Guinea looks at you as if you owed him bird seed,” and now I knew what he meant! I have never seen such a malevolent look from any animal as that Guinea was giving me.

I slowly raised my rifle and braced myself for the charge that I knew must be coming. Because the Guinea was obscured by brush, I had to wait for him to move in order to get a clear shot at him. The seconds hung in the air. Time was suspended. “When is he going to come?,” I kept asking myself.

And then, suddenly, the Guinea broke from cover!! But, much to my relief, he chose to run away from us instead of charging. I raised my rifle and sent a 50gr solid up his backside. He hit the ground, rolled once and was still.

We cautiously approached him but he’d had it. Then the celebration began. Handshakes all around and pats on my back. I was the day’s hero! I had faced one of the most dangerous adversaries Africa had to offer and had lived to tell the tale. I knew the memories would last a lifetime.

Nothing more dangerous and deadly than a severe case of hen pecking.

Good show, Bob! I was wanting one with an arrow last year but never took a shot. Next time for sure!

Do any of you keep guineas on your farms? I can order a variety of them here in the USA from poultry hatcheries. I've considered adding them to my farm menagerie.

Yep, the lever action was perfect for this hunt!

The rifle belonged to my PH. He let me do a little Guinea hunting with it one afternoon. I got five Guineas. We had a great Guinea fowl potjie the next evening. Very tasty.

The tracker kind of thought I was crazy when I asked to do the "trophy" photo with the Guinea. After my PH explained to him (in Afrikaans) that it was really for a joke/fun photo, then the tracker got a big kick out of the idea. He posed for the photo with that serious expression on purpose, going along with the joke.

Bob

I think the "trophy" photo of the guinea fowl works anyway. It is funny but it also shows the bird well.

How did you mount it? On the wall or in the stomach?

Ann

Guineafowl may turn white in colour if domesticated.

I am planning sometime in the next three years to buy some, breed them in pens and then release then into my deer farm. Harvest by shotgun outside the deer paddocks when I feel like it.

If they like grapes too much, they will all get harvested very quickly.

I've got 2 life size mounts in my trophy room: a nice Steenbok, and a rogue bull Guinea Fowl. Alass, the Guinea Fowl was shot while in a full reverse charge, and I used a Marlin Bolt Action .22 short, equipped with a silencer.

DD, aside from the Guinea Fowl in your hand, that background reminds me of the area north of Ft. Peck, where I used to do a lot of hunting for Sharptails, and Prarie Chickens.

Ft Peck? Yeah little bit. It's Somerset East however. Reminded me more of the high desert in south central Oregon, East of Klamath Falls, except no Guinea Fowl...by the way good eating bird, tasted just like chicken...

Everyone says it tastes just like chicken. Frog-tastes just like chicken. Snake-tastes just like chicken. Guinea Fowl-tastes just like chicken. Why don't they just eat the darn chicken?

Only the foolhardy arm themselves for Giunea Fowl with a rifle. Those of us who have "been there...done that" know the only sure medicine is a couple barrels of buckshot...#4 buck being best.

Also, I have a theory as to why they taste like chicken...they are always running away.

Actually two of the nicest meals I have had have been guineafowl.

One was at a pub / restaurant in Stratford-upon-Avon in England (ie Shakespeare's "home"). The pub was called the "Slug and Lettuce", unusual imagery for a restaurant . I ordered a roast or grilled guinea fowl and I remember it was absolutely delicious. After that a dozen or so of us went to a couple plays at the RSC. Good wines at the "Slug" as well.

The second time I remember was good, but have no other recollection.

Another fowl story. When hunting with PH Pierre in 2002, he bragged "You can ask for any sort of food you want and we can supply it, cooked anyway!" Well I thought I am not going to be a smart arse and ask for something impossible in Zimbabwe, so I asked for a nicely roasted (or however cooked) guineafowl. and he said "We can't do them, they are too tough and take too long to cook" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not going to let him live that one down. Can't do Guineafowl in Zimbabwe!

What a fowl answer I got.

You've better have a whole trained field team, a back up car,
a tactical stealth rifle.......and supervise from far away ; the very best being a remote controled tactical rifle.

When the critters are dispatched, take care, send a specialist check the beasts are really very dead. On the pic You see the sole survivor from the field team, the three others have been pecked to death.

NitroX,

Actually, I was told by my PH and his camp cook that wild Guineas can be kind of tough. But, they didn't have a problem with preparing them if I wanted to hunt and eat some. The cook made a potjie (similar to a stew) that was slow cooked all day over hot coals in a cast iron pot. By that evening, the Guinea meat was tender and delicious. I really enjoyed it.

Well, I am thinking about moving up to a heavier cartridge. Maybe a .25-20 or a .32-20 Win. I've just read too many stories about wounded Guineas being hard to stop in a charge. I felt a little under gunned with only that .22 Win Mag in my hands!

Wild guineas can be lovely in a potjie too, just select younger birds. I normally put a piece of chicken, or chicken stock in as well for the fat.

The bloke that lives behind me has a few running around his back yard. A chick ran past me when I was doing some gardening. I thought it was a quail at first

We shot the forest species in Mozambique. I must have some photos around somewhere and if I can find them I'll post. Spectacular birds, all irridescence and fringy feathers. And, yes, they taste good, too. However, only slightly like chicken. More like pheasant, perhaps, and certainly more flavorful than any store chicken.
