Colorado,

Naw, Kodiaks usually have an unlimited supply of eats, and are generally well tempered. Yes they get big, but pound for pound they are not as threatening as a Grizzly.

Grizzlies are piss and vinegar. If you think you are hunting a grizzly, know that they have been hunting you. They are great hunters, and have a bit more experience at it than I do.

Which reminds me, I need to get that video clip of a medium sized grizzly breaking an elk's neck in a stream. An animal twice its size, yet the damn thing went up, pawed away the antllers and snapped its neck with its hands/paws.

And if you see them at work, they have hands.

Here's a test - go to Kodiak Island and act like you are sleeping on a bear trail. The boars will avoid you, and the mothers with cubs will sniff and go on.

Do that same experiment in grizzly territory. The boars will eat heartedly, and the sows will teach her cubs the finer points of predation.

Playing dead significantly increaes your chances of survival. The boars, unless they are starving, will maul you and go on. Sows with cubs will do a bit more damage, unless it has been a bad year. And Grizzlies have many bad years.

The males will eat 1 to 3 cubs just to get the female to go into heat again.

And we will spend hundreds of dollars to find a female receptive to copulation. Damn.

Sorry, but I digressed.

I'll stick with my tag line.

And remember, the greatest birth control device ever created was....the wedding ring.

I remember that gun. Hallowell sold it a year or so ago. Second set of barrels in .458 Win. Mag. were added in Ferlach in the '60s, IIRC, and later rechambered to .450 No. 2. It wasn't cased when Hallowell sold it. I see that the price has increased 50% since then. Expensive case.

Grizz,

I would like to see that video. Have you seen the one with a Grizzly running down a moose(I think). The moose stumbles and the Grizz is all over it within seconds. Pretty impressive to say the least.

I should get it in about a week. I'll be selling my Chapuis 470NE, but keeping my Merkel .375 H&H. The A. Hollis I picked up a month ago was for my brother a.k.a. Colorado. I've got the brass/dies/bullets for it (500/450) and will be regulating it shortly, then send it off to him. Funny the 1907 Hollis and 1906 Jeffery were both made by Leonard about the same time.

I'll post pictures of the targets and the gun when I get it shooting.

400Nitro'

Why did you have to tell me that

50% inflation still, I reckon that this is too good to pass up. The rifle comes with dies, bullets, brass (40) and kynoch ammo (20) and a new (read modern) barrel. I've been wanting a pre-war british double, especially after reviewing the Funk 400/350 and the 500/450 A. Hollis. I sent the Funk 400/350 back as I thought it was over-priced.

Ok, you 450 No.2 guys, what loads do you use (recomend)?

What is the second barrel set in, ie calibre?

The advertisement mentions a second barrel set but doesn't specify what it is?

If there is a second barrel set, that would be nice.

I will post my loads for you soon, but want to double check them, as I like to be 100% accurate in any loads I publish online.

The second set was made in .458 Win., but was latter rechambered to 450 No.2 The onwer says the second set appears un-fired. Will get more detailed info this evening.

Bonanza:

Because I missed the son-of-a-bitch myself last year. I saw it on Hallowell's site and, not wanting it for myself (I'm a .450/.400 guy), didn't call. After thinking about it I decided that, at $12,500, if it was as good as described, I could make a quick $5K on it. It was sent out on approval to a prospective buyer the day before I called, and the guy kept it. I remember telling the guys at the DRSS hunt last year about it.

It sounds like a nice gun and is probably still underpriced. When Kynoch was restructuring their line after WWII, the .500/.450 and 450 No. 2 were among the first to be dropped. Since the No. 2 couldn't easily be converted to a more available caliber, I imagine a previous owner had the Ferlach .458 barrels made to solve the ammunition problem. Once the .450 No. 2's availability problems were solved, the new barrels were rechambered to the original caliber.

It looks very nice. Don't wing it though, be sure to get it evaluated. As long as it checks out, I think you did fine. So the Leonard number is close to that of the Hollis?
