Where can I find information on this round? One of the PHs on a DG hunting show used one, I am not familiar with it.

Cartridges of the World for starters, John Taylor's book. Stick around until a bit.

I have one made by Sabi Rifles in South Africa and love it to bits. I use it as my carry gun on all my hunts & it's a tremendous charge stopper.....

You might like to contact Eugene Combrink at www.sabirifles.co.za who will be able to tell you anything and everything you need to know about this calibre.

Alternatively feel free to e-mail me and I'll be happy to do anything I can to help.

As Steve says, the Sabi Rifles webpages are a good resource. Check here for info on the .500 Jeffery cartridge.

When John Taylor called it "an immensly powerful weapon" he wasn't kidding..... a few years ago I took an off centre texas heart shot at a running Buffalo and spun the animal 180 degrees and dropped him like a sack of coal. The PSP bullet travelled the entire length of the animal.

For those that are interested, you'll find images of 3 animals I stopped in full charge (in 2005) on the Tanzania page of my website. The Buff at the top of the page, (hit in the face somewhere, but can't remember where) the Lion at the bottom (look closely under HIS left eye) and the Leopard with the extra hole in his face at the bottom of the page.......

I have one as well. Mine is a custom Mauser takedown, a truly exquisite working rifle made by Duane Wiebe. Have yet to take an animal with it, but am trying to schedule another trip to Zim or beyond and the 500 will go with me.

Just remembered this incident from two or three years ago..... I shot this Buffalo through a (6 ish circumference) fever tree and he again dropped like a sack of the smelly brown stuff...... The bullet second from the left was recovered from just under the skin on the far side of the Buff. Range was 10 yards......

Before anyone comments on the ghostly rifle barrel, I photoshopped the client out but must have missed the barrel....... sorry 'bout that!

When I saw the picture, the first thing that crossed my mind was that I REALLY needed to get some of the amazing camo clothing he was wearing! It brought a new meaning to "Our product lets allows you to blend in with the backround"!

What is the recoil like? The 460 G&A wasn't bad but I didn't like the 460 Weatherby. My .50 Alaskan loaded hot gets 2020 FPS with 540 grain LBT hard cast bullets, the gun(Browning M-71) weighs right at 7.5 pounds. It gets my attention but it's managable.
I am trying to get an idea. I am mulling over a project so I am trying to be somewhat practical, if the recoil is similar to the Weatherby, I'd pass.

SubDoc,

Recoil is fine up to about 2200 and then it gets a bit steep.

I havefired 6 or 7, 500 Jeffrey's and alot of felt recoil seems
to be due to the Stock design.

You could also put in Recoil Reducers that makes a big Difference.

i'd agree completely. Make sure the stock fits and is the right design. (Sabi Rifles offered me a choice and then made recommendations) I also have a mercury tube arrestor in mine and whilst it's not a pussy cat to shoot, I don't notice the recoil.....

I think it's impossible to compare recoil by calibre as so much depends on rifle weight, individual shooters physical build, recoil tolerance and the other factors mentioned above....

Don't know if it'll help, but here's a couple of pictures of my one to show you the stock design.....

Sub Doc,

PM me your email and I'll email photos of my 2
and the 505 Gibbs to you. One of the 500J's a Left Handed gun
but it is very easy to shoot even though I am Right Handed
and that says something about how it was built.

Shakari is spot on re weight etc.

Make sur ethe gun is well balanced so it is easy to carry and shoot.

A heavy barreled gun gets to be a pain by the end of the day.

Suggest you stock it like the English do - straight stocks with cheek piece
and not like Brno's or other Hog back designs.

Good luck.

500 Nitro,

If you'd like to e-mail them to me, I'll be happy to post them for you.......

I'll add that mercury recoil arrestors can make a huge difference in felt recoil...... Jim Nixon who posts here occasionally has a .458 Lott with 2 or 3 fitted in the stock and I've seen him shoot that (off sticks) single handed...... but I've gotta say, he's far from the average shot! ..... in fact, I've never seen anyone better.

Thanks Mickey,
I have tried and tried to take some good pics of that rifle, but can't get decent ones to save my life. I do have the pics that Duane took and they are quite good. My image host is down at the moment (hunt101). I'll try to do that later.

Custom 500 Jeffery on a DWM military K98 Action.
This is a light rifle, short and good to carry, good to use in the bush but not a benchrester at all !

A friend shooting it, full recoil, look at his rear hand it has come way from the pistol grip

When you say it’s a left-hander, do you mean a right bolt rifle in a left-hand stock or do you mean a fair dinkum leftie repeater in 500 Jeff?

Fergus

Is that the rifle you are thinking of taking to Africa? It is a wonderful piece and should see Africa at least once in it's life.

Alf,

As usual, yet another beautiful rifle - thanks for posting it.

Subdoc, Fergus & other left hookers, I was in Sabi rifles workshop last week and they have 2 seriously nice L/H actions suitable for .500 Jeffery still available. Unfortunately I can't remember the manufacturers name but they're from the USA. - Whatever they were, they're bloody nice. If you or anyone else wants to know more they can either go direct to Sabi Rifles or just send me a PM or e-mail and I'll make a point of getting the details. Going on my my experience with them they are very good value for money. I get an idea their made to measure/custom rifles start at around ZAR25K - but that's just from memory.....
