303:
There are a number of Colt .45-calibre handgun cartridges, but the two common ones are the .45 Colt and the .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol).

The .45 Colt is a large-case rimmed cartridge which originated in the revolvers and lever-rifles of the American West.

There is a tendency to refer to this cartridge as the .45 Long Colt these days to avoid confusion with the much shorter rimless .45 ACP.

The .45 ACP is mainly chambered in automatic pistols like the 1911, so might be referred to by some as the .45 auto. A few .45 or .455 revolvers can chamber this round with the aid of a circular clip.

The term '.45 auto' should probably be discouraged as it could result in confusion with the .45 Auto Rim, a semi-rimmed pistol cartridge not commonly encountered today.

Note also, there is a .45 S&W which is about 1/10" shorter than the .45 Long Colt. My bro's .45 Colt Uberty Rem revolver works best with the shorter .45 S&W case, as factory-length .45 Colts are a 'tich' too long for it.
: The .45 Auto-rim is a .45ACP lenth case with a very beefy rim for mostly WW1 military-type Colt and S&W reveolvers thus chambered, which also used .45ACP rounds in 1/2 moon clips. Some of those big military .45 revolvers were also chambered for the .455 Webly as well.

Daryl,

Have you heard of the 455 Eley? I have seen a Colt revolver in this chambering but I believe finding ammo would be a problem. If not, please let me know. Would 455 Webly be interchangable (like a 38 in a 357)?

The .455 Ely is the same ctg. as the .455 Webly. Brass is available, but it isn't interchangable with anything due to the exceptionally thin rim.(to my knowedge)
: Factroy ammo that worked quite well in Africa, was a 260gr. FMJ at 600+ fps. The Brits held that speed of penetration, or length of time the bullet was in a body,(duration of penetration) increased the nerve shock to the system. This one, with it's very low velocity, certainly increased 'lag time'.
: A friend gave me a few cases some time ago(5-10years), and it was brand new solid head construction.
: I'll bet Starline makes it or some outfit like that.
: .455 Ely (or Webly) can be loaded to about 850fps with a 250gr. bullet. A flat nose bullet would increase not only accuracy, but terminal performance as well. The large Break-open Webleys are preferred, but getting scarce. A Fosbery, semiauto revolver, is the 'cat's meow' in.,455's!
