Renting out my double.
      #45929 - 07/01/06 03:09 AM

I’ve though about renting my 470 to needy blokes who want to use one on safari, but how could I ensure its safe return. Or is it just ludicrous to even suggest such an idea.

I think it's really a bad idea, but having said that. A security deposit would insure it's safe return.

What about the liabilities involved? An accident, self inflicted or hurting someone else.
A guy gets killed by a buff and it's said the gun missfired.

Doing all this for a few hundred bucks mind you. Anything more it pays them to buy their own.

For the money involved the risk is not worth it.

When I was 16 or 17 years old I had a job working at an equipment rental place for a while. I would not want to rent out anything that I actually wanted to own myself...

Hmmmmm,
When I went to Africa I went with a borrrowed Mod. 70 and a borrowed A. Hollis and Son 450/400 3 inch.
I guess that's what best friends are for?

I have offered the use of my A. Hollis and Son rifle for safaris to members of this and AR forums.

Just seemed thing to do! I haven't gotten around to charging my friends yet!

Rusty is a hell of a guy and offered me the use of his Hollis for my upcoming hunt. I had to decline as I figured he might take exception to having to pry it out of my cold, dead hands to get it back! Lee.

Rusty,
Lending a gun to a friend and "renting one" is entirely two different things. I'd have no problem loaning a gun. The picture in my sigtag is my double, my sons remington and a marlin I lent to my daughters boyfriend. A friend is using my 1187 tomorrow.
I think that most people would lend a friend a gun. To rent it to a stranger or an internet buddy is something else.

Rusty,

I would do that as well. I also let friends use my firearms and anything else and have never had any problems resulting from that... But things that are leased or rented tend to get abused a lot.

I agree Lee440, Rusty is a stand-up guy! I've seen, and handled his Hollis, and I don't think I'd lone to to one of my sons!

That was not true, my sons are reliable people who apprecieate a fine rifle as much as I do. Addtionly, I'd most likely loan one of my doubles to any one of the members of DRSS, and have loaned one or two to others on our annual hunts, at Camp Cooley! People I do not know, however, with the exception of a couple who post here on NE, are out where my rifles are concerened, especially my doubles. I figure, if they cared as much about owning a rifle like one of mine, they would already have one just like it! RENTING IT? Forget it!

If I trusted a guy enough to rent him a double, I would let him borrow it for free.

Thanks guys.

I thought as much.

BTW, I was thinking more like $2000.00 for the duration of the hunt plus some sort of collateral to boot.

Bonanaza,
If I had $10,000.00 for the hunt and $2,000.00 plus collateral for the rental, I'd figure a way to buy a gun.

If it meant postponing the hunt or stealing my wife's weightwatcher money. I would come up with the difference.

But maybe that's just me.

THe Hollis I found was a rare find for 5K and I don't know if it shoots for shit. You can put together a 458 Win for $1000 but, you are looking at 9-10k minimum for somthing in the 470 class double.

This would be the business plan: I'd swipe you CC for 12K and when you returned the rifle, I refund 10k.

Not endorsing or anything but I know a PH in Zim that rents his belgian boxlock - which is his #1 rifle - for $100 a day when he's not booked. Told me that both clients and PH's rent it, especially when elephant the plan.

If you were going to do it at all, which I wouldn't, I would do it with a rifle that is already beat up and you aren't very attached to. You would definitely need to work out some form of collateral and also what to do it is gets messed up, which I would guess would happen a lot more then you think. Keep in mind that people will take care of a rifle that was loaned to them by a friend but I doubt most people would be very careful with something they pay for to rent. It would need to be some sort of you break you buy policy. I think a daily rate with a minimum amount would be the way to go.

But I wouldn't if I were you. Way too much of a headache. Plus if it is 2 grand you might as well buy a DR and then sell it after the hunt IMO.

I believe the idea here is that there are poor bastards like me that can scrape the money together for the hunt, but not the gun. Yet (I/they) still would like to hunt with a double, the only way then to do this is to barrow one or rent. I personally hate barrowing anything, especially very expensive items like a double gun. If I were to damage it, I'd feel like shit, and likely loose a friend. For a mire $2000.00 I would get the gun for a couple weeks prior for practice; use during the hunt without any concerns about functionality of the weapons I might get from the PH…just plain piece of mind. I equate this to going SCUBA diving in a foreign country and having to rent their shitty gear. It removes from the experience…believe me. Also, since this is a business, there certainly would be no personal attachments to the weapon. I would not rent the rare and loved double of my dreams, but a new industrial grade, functional gun. If it gets abused, I’m not going to cry over it. If it’s damaged, well, that’s what renters insurance is all about.

In the end the renter has the piece of mind that he has his equipment, gets to check it out first, gets use to it and does not worry too much about damaging it and/or loosing a friend (or replacing a very expensive item).

The next question is what gun would you rent out? I think about 5 Merkel’s in 470NE would bring in a nice sustainable profit. It’s a nice rugged gun, not too fancy and they shoot well. I think antique guns would not hold up well, and with parts not being availible are a poor choice.

The only rifle I would consider for such a venture would be a Searcy "rental" grade. It would have no engraving, finished in Dimandkote, have a neutral stock in plain wood and be chambered in 470. So, if any one wants to really rent my double, PM me.

2,000 to rent for a safari. I hardly doubt it. Heck I rather just buy one and make payments on it if I couldnt afford it straight out.
Then after the safari keep it if I want. If I want to sell it I would rather take a chance on losing 2,000 as to rent one for that much.
