Ruger #1 calibre choice?

the day will come when I will be able to afford a Ruger #1 Tropical. It will be used mainly in Canada, with a very low likelyhood of me taking it to Africa, but that would be good to.

Just wondering what the most versatile calibre would be for me? I would use it for Bison, elk, moose, bear hunting/camp protection.

Last I saw it comes in the 405 Win, 375 H&H, the 2 big 416's, and the 458 WM.

For where you are get the .375 H&H. You'll find ammo easier to locate also.

Nothing wrong with the others.

I used to be a #1 fanatic until I became a double fanatic. I have had: a 22-250, 25/06, 30/06, 300Wm, 375H&H and a 45-70. Ruger #1 means non dangerous, but maybe large (moose) game. I'd choose the .300Wm as it is the most versatile, in fact; the 200 grain bullent can be driven fast enough to match the 375 in energy. BTW, I still have a .375 - but it's in a double, I sold all my #1's to pay for the double

I am saving now for a #1 in .405. I think I can have some fun with it shooting B.P and cast bullets, Shoot lighter bullets for deer size game and load it as hot as I can for moose and elk in the timber. And should I ever get another chance to do Africa I would haul it along just to see what it can do with the heavy bullets.

I think any of the rounds you spoke of would be a great choice. Good luck!

The .458 is a good choice if for no other reason than it thinks it's a varmint rifle for the groups it usually shoots! Several in my area here love(loved) the number 1 in .458, even the late great Elmer Keith! He even had a personalized Idaho license plate for "458"! His "Gun Notes" books (two additions) speak of the .458 #1 several times with high praise. My good shooting buddy killed a bull bison with his #1 in .458........

With that said I am after the .405 Winchester in the #1 and would pick it as my choice! It is rich with nostalgia and rumor has it a good if not great shooter as well.............

Want to try those 400 grain .411" Woodleighs I have read others using........

I would go with the .405Win, it will handle anything you wish to hunt also in the No1 you can load up to .450/.400 3 1/4" velocities with 400 grainers. I have the Winchester, 1895 and Ruger No1 in .405Win and can not fault them.

Given the choices, .375 H&H and the .458's are the most logical because of availability and cost of ammunition and components.

The only Ruger #1 I still own is a .375.

I had a .338 Win Mag #1A that was awfully nice for big North American game. I shot a friend's .375 H&H #1 Tropical and I thought it handled awfully well. Recoil was heavier than the #1A .338 but the gun design was different. Recoil was certainly not of a sort that most fellows couldn't learn to manage it. The #1 and the .375 H&H seem to go together awfully well. A nice balance between power and manageability.

I think I am about to buy a tropical, in .375. In fact would have bought it today if the local shop had a blue one rather than stainless steel. I am sure SS is best for bear hunting in Alaska, but it hurts my eyes.

The heavy factoy Ruger#1 should be the .375H&H. They're very accurate, easy to shoot well, and more than needed - perfect.

I am not a fan of hunting dangerous game with any single shot. I have a No.1 in 405 WCF it is a fun gun, it is in the very early stages of being refined. I am starting to build a No.3 in 9,3x74R, as for the .405 I'll post some groups from the range this weekend

I have had 2 No1's. A 243 1A and a 45/70. I still have the 45/70, I will never part with it.
As for your choice in calibers, If you intend to use it as a close range hunting rifle I would consider the 405 or the 45/70 as they are quite a bit lighter than the 458 or the 458 Lott. However, if you like the heavier Safari rifle the 458 or the Lott can be loaded with 350 to 450 grain bullets for Canada game.
If you want a rifle with some reach I would go with a 375 or a 338. I like the ones with the Alex Henry fore ends and iron sights. Those No1's handle like a fine shotgun.

2 Different friends of mine had No1's one a 375 the other a 458. I fired both of them, they shot good.

Tell me about the Ruger#3 in 9.3 X 74R, This sounds lke a gun I would like to build! I have custom built 45-70 in a Ruger#1. I would opt for a more durable finish for a "hunting gun", like stainless steel. Is it best to buy the receiver separate, or purchase a whole gun and rebarrel it? I also built a 7MM STW out of a 458 Ruger#1. Shillen did the barrel and I like their work! I've also used SSK which is one hell of a barrel!

Whose barrel would you use for the 9.3X74R?

I really like the #1 and would have no problems taking on ANY game with it/single shot; WITH the right round. If your going after DG then use a round that plants them with one shot. Such as a 458 Lott, 450 NE #2 or possibly the 458 Win Mag hotly loaded. The #1's are so friggin strong they can take it. I did not mention the other DG rounds because they are price prohibitive in the #1. I would choose a 45-70 in a lever or double gun for DG, but not a single shot.

The only issue IMO is they are light. I used to shoot a #3 in 45-70 that my father had, which he hand loaded with ass thumping loads. I was only 110lb and 14 years old and it really HURT to shoot. Now 28 years later I think I can manage it.

Some time ago, Les Bauska had some #1 actions cast up for making up .600 Nitros. I wonder if anyone here has one or knows of one? Now, THAT would be a dangerous game single shot - as was F.Selous' 4 bore single smoothbore.
: About the #3 in .45/70. Back in the 70's a friend had one and asked me to load him up some 'heavy' loads. I used Hornady data, the heaviest, fastest loads listed for 500gr.Jacketed bullets - supposedly around 1,800fps. They sure kicked & it took him a long time to get people to shoot them off for him!

I don't know for sure what you intend the #1 for, but for anything in Canada, I sure like the .405, having used it on both moose and bear. to me it'll do anything as fine as my #1 in .375, and shoots just as fine, under an inch. The word is out that Ruger finally is going to start making the #1's in my favorite of all, the 9.3X741 ......get you order in now! I have three doubles in 9.3X74, plus a Farquharson, and my order's in for one of the first #1's. ......believe me, this will be a fine combination of rifle and caliber. For most dangerous game it's not a double, but a wristband with spare ammo makes it a fast shooter with a bit of practice...... you'll not regret a medium bore #1! ~Arctic~

I don't understand the Alex Henry
fore arm appeal. It looks like the
spot where you tie a rope around
the rifle or it was to be a Schnabel
and he did not finish it.

You ain't whistling Dixie there for sure. And that steel curved butt plate didn't help matters at all!

I'm visiting Dave's Gun Shop here in Denver Saturday to try and work a deal on a #1 in 458 Lott Tropical (blued of course). With this I think I'll just about have my Safari arsenal stocked.

1. Hollis & Sons 500/450 <---Newly purchased
2. Marlin 1895G in .457 Alaskan via WWG.
3. Ruger #1 in .458 Lott <---Saturday I hope.

And if I can ever get that blasted Kodiak 12 bore to shoot, I might take it for shits and grins.

Man my wife is going to freak over another gun! But as I told her, I've neglected this hobby too long. Back to my roots of guns and stuff.
