Most weekends during the dry-season, 470NEBD. ...and never get bored either!

Check out the hunting page on the Marrakai web-site for a few piccies, though I haven't updated it for ages. Here's another story: October Hunt

Lots of pigs are taken each year here in Aus with double rifles.
I regularly hunt for quality boars in high country in far west New South Wales, out on the flat country of outback Queensland, and up north in the creeks rivers swamps and waterholes of Cape York.
My favourite hog slayer is a 400-350 which works real well in all those locations.
For big boars in thick cover however, something like a 470 or 500 nitro is just the ticket!
The double rifle is just perfect for hogs in thick bush IMO.

Spot-on, Alan. My favourite chambering for boars in the thick stuff is the .577 x 2 3/4 Light Nitro. I have tossed up a story about hunting boar with that cartridge on a previous thread.

Another case in point: I was hunting with Marty and another mate the other day in a spring-jungle south of Darwin, with the .577. I was the 'bird-dog' on this occasion, crashing my way through the palm-fronds and vines inside the fringe, hoping to chase out a boar or two for the other guys to get a shot at. Of course, the second boar I put up decided to double back through the thick stuff. I was swinging nicely through his body as he passed at full gallop, when he instantly disappeared behind a wall of young palms. I simply continued the swing anyway till it felt about right, and slapped the front trigger. I heard the boar crash away for 20 metres more, then all quiet. The blood-trail round the other side of the palm-thicket was the usual from that cartridge, shall we say 'very easy to follow', and his tusks are now in my trophy cabinet. Couldn't have done that with a .308!

Tony,
That bloody 577 of yours would be close to the ultimate in thick scrub pig stoppers I would think, and a damn fine bull killer as well.
One day I might have a go at putting one together myself.
Another good cartridge as you are well aware is the old 500 bp shooting the nitro for black 440 Woodleigh loads.
Our mutual friend PP has certainly taken a lot of good territory boars with his!
Yes we are indeed fortunate to have plenty of game in Aus and plenty of country well suited to double rifle hunting and of course a good number of keen double rifle hunters.

It's true that the "large bores" work really well on "large boars".
Shooting on open grain stubble my little scoped double in 7x65R works great as shots are often taken at 150 yards or more but that is not the rifle for NT jungle hunting.
For that you are best off with a large bore heavy bullet moderate velocity open sighted well fitting double.
Ah yes, pure heaven!

I loved the video. Its one I'm likely to watch over and over. Honestly, I'm more likely to be able to hunt wild boar than cape buffalo at least on a regular basis.

Ive hunted them with a handgun and backed up a friend when he hunted them with a bow. The arrow failed to stop his, and the boar charged me. That's a memory I'll take to my grave. I was using a Thompson Contender pistol in .44 mag. It had required follow up hits to stop my boar; but at 10 feet it worked like the "Hand of God". I can still see that boar sliding towards me.

Next time we're planing something more traditional. I havent decided yet, either a my double 762x51R, or a Drilling Ive been trying to talk my friend out of, 16x16 over 9.3x74. Until then I content to dream of Africa.

Yep, the DRSS hunts boars each year. Check out this thread for more info on our adventures:

What's a thread on DR boar-hunting without photos?
Just tossed a couple up on my previous post from that jungle-hunt.

Aw, what the hell, here's another one from down the Roper the other day...
