How do you load BP bore cartridges?
      #44820 - 25/12/05 04:53 AM

Where do you get the brass? Seat the balls? Lube? Patches? Wads? Is there a book on how to do this? Where do you get supplies unique to these rounds?

Thanks,
Colorado

Wads, lubricants and I believe, brass cases can be purchased at www.trackofthewolf.com . They have been a great supplier for me for BP stuff as well as brass for normal BP ctg. guns, 3-1/4" and .50 cal too.
: Recently, I saw an add for 12 bore brass in a gun mag. It was $23.00US for 2. I believe it was either a Rifle or Handloader magazine.
: NEI makes moulds for about all of the original bullets for the bore rifles, at least to 10 bore & probably will make any size wanted, but they are very expensive.
: Jeff Tanner in England makes RB moulds any size for $24.00US or there-a-bouts.

You have a fair bit of work ahead of you before you shoot that gun or even start in on the task of gathering consumables for it.

Start out by ordering a brick of Cerrosafe chamber casting alloy from Brownells.
Get some pure lead roundballs greater in diameter than the barrel bores too.
Cast the chambers including an inch or so of the bores --both of them-- and slug both bores at the muzzle and at the chamber end.

From there you'll be able to tell what kind of cases the gun was set up for... they could have been paper or brass with thin or thick walls.
From the bore slugs you'll be able to tell what diameter of projectile to go with, that factored along with the rate of twist and the type of rifling profile and it's bore/groove measurements, and with some consideration of the proof marks, will get you pointed in the right direction in your search for cases, bullets, and what kind of load to set the gun up with.

Can't wait to see what you guys come up with.
I expect you'll have a bit of a learning curve to climb in the early stages, it'll likely be quite rewarding for you.

Another source for brass shells and hand reloading tools for brass shells is Rocky Mountain Cartridge, LLC

Rocky Mountain has a set of instructions on loading brass shotshells here http://www.rockymountaincartridge.com/page10.html which shows the basic procedures involved.

I didn't reply to this but the gun sold 5 minutes before I called. I was a whistler 12 bore from Thad Scott. I wonder who bought it?
