The 500/450 is found mostly in Holland & Holland rifles. They changed to the 500/465 after the British Government banned 45 bores in India and the Sudan.
It is a very good calibre, the ballistic equal of the 450 3 1/4" and the 450 No2. It shoots .458 diameter bullets. If you can fine brass it is a great calibre.
I have killed 3 elephants and 2 buff with my 450 No2.
I have killed several deer, pigs and even a few coyotes with 350 grain bullets as well.

The following calibers are basically indistinguishable from each other on game:

450 Nitro Express
450 No. 2
500/450
500/465
470 Nitro Express
475 Nitro Express
475 No. 2

There has been an assertion that the 476 Westley Richards is a step up from this crowd because the bullet is 520 grains. And some people say that the .470 cartridges kill better than the .458 cartridges because of the added bullet diameter. Perhaps, but even if true I think the difference must be slim.

Instead of selecting one of these cartridges over another, I would just select the gun that fit me best and was in the best condition, regardless of which of these calibers it is chambered for.

Were you looking at that one on line for $4,750.00, also? It seems like a good buy and unique DR.

Brass is easy to find - for any of the English calibres.

It is a great round - I used to have a 500/450 U/L Hammer
DR by Holland - loved it.

It will do anything the others do with correct bullet placement.

I bought the 500/450 from Thad Scott. Actually Bonanza and I bought it. I'm thinking about the 12 bore Whistler BP also. Seems dirt cheap and would be a fun hobby gun. I like the BP doubles, they add a level of "care and feeding" to the hobby. Also I really appreciate the looks of the hammers, very classic....to me at least.

I never thought I could get into this hobby, way out of my price range, until I researched it a bit more. I realized you don't need to buy a $35000+ double to own one. The ole' Kodiak is providing loads of fun...and its dirt cheap! However I'm stepping up into the English gotta' have relm with this one.

That's the one... I was going to buy it.

Congrats! It is a beautiful DR, and you almost snoozed too long. If I weren't tapped out from buying another drilling, you wouldn't have had a chance, once I saw it.

I'll have to salve my wounds with my new Charles Daley (Sauer) sidelock drilling...

Please. post some better photos and a report on your beautiful classic DR.
