Using elephant hide.
      #44599 - 22/12/05 06:43 AM

I'm thinking of getting a few gunslips made out of the elephant hide I have from this summer, and am wondering if I might as well look into having anything else made at the same time. An ammo belt for example, or a belt for everyday use.

Have any of you had things made from ele hide?

Any suggestions of what else besides gunslips might be nice to have made?

Erik

I have noticed that elephant hide gets really grody with use since it is so rough. It tends to pick up dirt, hold it and look really dirty. An ammo belt would be fine, as it is ok for ammo belts to be grody. Same for gun cases. Once I saw some ele hide seat covers and they were so disgusting with ground in dirt that I would not have wanted to sit on them. So whatever you make, I suggest it be an item that is still usable if dirty or unsightly.

Eric

I have a couple of end tables I have covered with Ele hide. They look pretty cool and get a lot of comments.

I'd send some off to Russell Moccasin Company, and have a couple pairs of Safari Boots made. What the heck, get a pair of cowboy boots made too.

Good Point 500. I can see how the hide would just hold all the dirt. Never thought about that.

I've seen a top of the line double gun case made from that hide .
The case also included ivory handled tools and cleaning rod.
The hide was sprayed with a grey leather lacquer which was easy to clean with a damp cloth.
I've also seen western boots made from the same hide and colored with a leather Lacquer.
They looked very dressy.
I do not agree with the comments that elephant hide is dirty and hard to keep clean.
If its tanned properly and finished properly you can make anything you want out of it.
My wife has an elephant hide handbag that looks very smart.

I heard the foreskin makes a fine wallet; and rubbing it will turn it into a suitcase...

Since it was a tuskless cow that I shot, it will be difficult to make something out of a foreskin!

Something to keep in mind...if you are going to travel with these articles internationally all the CITIES rules apply...

CITES means nothing in AUS. They will seize Elephant Products anyway.

Mick,

What happens if one of us American types enters OZ with a pair of elephant hide boots and one of those wallet trunk combos I described?

If you get caught at Customs it will be siezed and thrown in the Garbage. It may be put on display as an example.

When elephant was moved from CITES 1 to CITES 2 the idiot Australian government decided to make an moronic exemption and specifically banned all elephant products, hunting etc. So it doesn't matter what happens to elephant on CITES now in Australia.

Twenty years ago or so, we had a pseudo-socialist government in power in Australia. One day a hunter wrote to them and asked what the laws were for bringing hunting trophies back into Australia, instead of much more wisely asking other hunters. SHOCK HORROR! The government and their minions discovered people could do what they liked and they weren't being controlled!!!!!!!!! So these idiots wrote demanding letters to dozens of countries around the world demanding they provide evidence of their conservation policies and programmes or else the Australian government would ban hunting trophies from their countries. Many told them to shove it (ie why should they be judged by an inept government of morons), some replied. Eventually Australia adopted CITES classifications mostly except for elephant. Another anomaly is leopard can not be imported either as they are 'endangered' per the pen pushers in Canberra.

I personally wouldn't use elephant leather on anything going through different countries. What happens if a customs official anywhere wants to see your CITES documentation for the leather? Easier just to use buffalo or something similar.

I have seen the elephant leather double gun case in question as well, if it is the same one. The owner told me it is just a presentation case and he uses a different one for travelling. It was very heavy as well.

I do think it would be nice to be able to use some of the ele leather from a cow hunt as a memory piece in the home or other uses. What was it traditionally used for in the past?

A cow elephant, huh? There goes the expandable luggage thing.

However, you could probably sell most of it to me for the creation of an appropriate fascimile of my first wife and her wonderful mother. Come to think of it, I am half a cow ele short....

Thanks for the tip on elephant and leopard products in OZ. My elephant hide boots will have to remain in the US. And my acquisition of leopard bikini underwear for my 275 pound frame has been put on hold. Sorry for the visual.

When I visited OZ, I was going for the leopard drawers with the black ele cowboy boots with a black Stetson. Now that would have been an entrance...

CITIES aint real flash in the US either.
I tried to buy a pair of kangaroo hide boots from Cabela's late last year.
I was told the wont export them to Australia because kangaroo's are an endangered species and they qouted CITIES.
Absolute horse shit,I shoot one or two per week to feed my dogs.

I don't think the CITES convention has anything to do with kangaroos and endangered.

The Greenies ran a successful bullshit campaign and as a result the State of California banned all kangaroo products as they were "endangered".

With the estimate of kangaroo population in Australia a few years back (and that means higher than pre-European settlement too) being 63 million kangaroos (high estimate ever) they sure are endangered.

A similar BS campaign was run to get kangaroo meat off UK supermarket shelves as well, and the big supermarkets took it off the shelves.

I have a couple pairs of kangaroo skin shoes, very soft and supple leather, so why aren't boots available in Oz? Never heard that before?
