Drilling with sleeved small calibur rifle barrel

I'm looking for a drilling to hunt small game and there seems to be very few around with 222 or 22 Savage rifle barrels. Is it possible to buy a older drilling with a larger rifle barrel say 8x57JR or 9.3x72R and have the barrel sleeved to 222? If so, who would do this job? Thanks for your help.

I've seen many older drillings with the rifles barrels already sleaved to some small bore caliber (22 of some sort, or an old Western caliber like 32 something). I bet a lot of war trophies came back to the US and metric rimmed ammunition was not availible so they had the rifle barrels sleaved. They should not be too hard to find. In fact I have the opposite problem I'd like an older drilling but with the larger rifle caliber and many of the ones I've seen were sleaved!! Take a look at Gunsamerica.

Pheasantfinder I am sorry I misunderstood your post abit. You are asking about sleeving a drilling, rather than finding one with a sleeved barrel. Oops. Sure its possible. Though my inclination is to leave the existing drillings in their original caliber, but to each their own with their own guns. Have you thought of a combination gun? I've seen some with 222 rifle barrels if memory serves me correctly. Just a thought.

Find one in extra good condition in a bastard rifle caliber like one of the rimmed Sauer or Collath calibers to have the sleeve work done. You can get these much cheaper than a 9,3X72R or 8X57JR.

If rifle ammo is not readily available, the price goes way down, providing the seller has any common sense.

You can always fit a small caliber rifle barrel to one of the shotgun tubes to your drilling. I have them in 22 lr, 22 mag and 22 hornet. Work very well and you can remove and replace them without losing zero. Tom

In Europe insert-barrels is popular www.einstecklauf.de especially for Krieghoff, Merkel (up to 5,6x52) and in some occassion Blaser.
The 5,6x52R and 5,6x50R mag is close to 222 Rem in performance. Krieghoff Optima accept even 9,3x74R.

I've had, or now have various types of inserts. I have settled on the Kreighoff shotgun barrel insert in 22mag. It is sufficiently accurate and Hits with a bit of authority. Ammo is inexpensive and easy to carry. A gunsmith familiar with drillings can alter the flip up sight to stay up with the rifle barrel de-selected, so you can use the right barrel with the insert, the rear sight, and the set trigger.

My inserts are all the longer rimfire type, about 12" or so. The shorter barrel inserts are far better to carry in the field, however, and I may have mine bobbed about 4-5".

The full length inserts in centerfire calibers are accurate, but are also not as convenient if you want to use both shotgun barrels frequently during the hunt. I got rid of mine in 22 Hornet and 222 Rem for that reason.
