Great story of how your hunt went mate,i enjoyed your pics too..are the timber struts in the shed to carry the weight of heavy snow? Just an interesting way of building something a different way that we are used to here.

Gryphon,

The struts are both for the snow, and also to hold up the steel rail that goes around the side and back of the shed, from where we hang the moose.

I presume your sheds/houses don't need to be as sturdy as ours, since you most likely have never had a single snowflake on your roof!

I have had snowfalls on the roof but nothing compared to what you have there, our higher country in winter usually needs a stronger roof of course but still nothing like your area.

Erik,

Thanks for the pictures and the great story! I've read here and there about hunting moose with dogs, but your story really made it "come alive" for me.

Good luck with getting your daughter to hunt later on! She looks like she's having fun so far

Chasseur,

Virtually all women in my family hunt, so I'm hoping my daughter will follow in their footsteps and do so too when she gets older!

The ladies of your family are indeed a fine group of women. I think your daughter has promise to be a huntress too especially with all the exposure to the sport.

Erik,

What a fantastic experience! I have an old friend in Sweden who is a keen moose hunter and now I can see why.

Congratulations and I hope you get many more moose in the years to come!

Thanks guys.

John,

I certainly hope that both my kids (we had another baby a month ago) will join in on the fun in the future.

Mehul,

Unless the wolves eat up all the moose (the wolf population is increasing very quickly... ), I am sure that I'll have many more moose in my rifle sights in the upcoming years!

Well come over here and shoot some!

There is a place for these animals, but their population needs to be controlled.

Oh man great story, myself being a dog man, I loved to hear how you worked your dogs. Tell me are they Norwegian Elk Hounds. They sure look like them, I never realized that they were used for that. Thanks for sharing.

They are indeed Norwegian Elkhounds. And are the most common moose dogs used in Norway.

Here's some detailed info found:

In reply to:

Breed Characteristics

The Norwegian Elkhound is a nimble, quick, courageous, playful, and independent dog. Their stamina is legendary, therefore a solid run behind a bike or some other form of vigourous exercise on a daily basis is necessary. This dog is known to have excellent hearing, and a loud voice which it enjoys using.

The Norwegian Elkhound has a thick weatherproof coat, so it is no surprise that he is most happy in the great white outdoors. This dog loves to go places, but if you plan on walking, understand that your Norwegian Elkhound will pull you there by his leash.

Breed History

The history of the Norwegian Elkhound dates back 6,000 years where they are mentioned in Norse Sagas alongside their Viking masters. The Vikings used them for guard work, hunting, and they took them on their long expeditions abroad. The breed has changed very little over the last 6,000 years.

In the latter part of the 19th century the breed became known in Great Britain. In fact a Norwegian Elkhound found his way into the Royal Family in 1895; President Eisenhower also had one as a pet. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1930.

Most importantly, the Norwegian Elkhound was used for hunting Elk or what we call Moose in North America. He would locate the Elk, follow him and hold him in one spot until the dog's master would come and shoot it. In order to avoid the Elk's antlers and hooves, the Norwegian Elkhound had to be fast and nimble. He also had to have great stamina because the hunt would often go all day long. They are rumoured to be able to smell their prey over a distance of several kilometres.

Though classified as a hound, the Norwegian Elkhound is a true spitz.

Ah, I thought so, we show our Chessys in field and breed events and of course I hunt them on geese and ducks.
We often see the Elky as we call them here. at shows, I have always liked the looks, but never actually realized that you do indeed hunt with them, always thought them to be a guarding breed. I called the wife to ask her about them because she's is the all breed expeert and she said "of course dummy they are great hunters", but can be a little sharp. Enjoyed hearing how they work, pretty amazing. Thanks again for sharing.

I guess 6000 years of hunting isn't too bad for a dog breed.

Seriously though, I don't think there can be many more breeds in the world (that basically haven't changed/evolved at all in 6000 years) with such long hunting traditions? Most other hunting dog breeds are much newer/younger.

The Vikings of course used these dogs as mentioned in the quote above, and ultimately, when a Viking warrior died, his dogs would be buried with him so that he would have the dogs with him in Valhalla.

I was pointed to this article so that I could read about the Elkhound. I am looking for a dog that can track wounded game or blood trail to the dead animal in timber or brush. I would also use it to flush game from brush or bay it. The animals hunted are in California and are black-tailed deer, black bears and wild boars.
