A Northern Territory Safari
      #4374 - 11/10/03 01:42 AM

I'm hoping to get to the Top End of Oz next year for a hunt.

A member of NE.com sent me some photos of his recent hunting activities in the "Top End" and kindly agreed to share them with us here.

A true NT "cresent"

A "Magnum" pig with ivory to spare.

Thanks for the photos.

Have just spent a week on the Roper River. Had the most enjoyable time ever - beautiful place, plenty of game and the best tasting fish of all time. At night you can look up and see forever.

Don't miss it!!

Its been a long time since I was at the Roper River. But I remember there being great fishing there. Caught some nice barras there. Big crocs too in the river.

What other game did you hunt int he area?

We were camped on the edge of about 20,000 acres of wetland that feeds the Roper. Hordes of pigs, buffalo, scrub bull, donkey, brumby and bird shooting. Great Barra lagoon about 100 yards from camp. The property had been fenced but most where down and not maintained, the buff just push them over. Didn't see any salties in the lagoon although there was several freshies there but plenty of big salties in the River.

I have heard that if there are freshwater crocs that there won't be salt water crocs. Is this true or was my friend just trying to get out of payng off on a bet he had lost ot me?

I can't answer that although I don't think I would take the chance. The day we arrived back in Darwin there was a report (in the N.T. News) of a tour guide being hit by a freshie and suffering some pretty severe injuries. I spent a lot of time in a canoe on the lagoon and managed to get within a few feet of a couple of big (about 5 foot)freshies, pretty powerful animals - they would take a fair size bite. As inviting as the water looks, swimming is a real no go zone up there.

HiWall

When I was at Ropers Bar we campled on the North side of the Roper River, just over the ford.

Using the spotlight at night there was a very large salty just over on the other side of the river. So if you were hunting down river there definitely would be lots there.

We also hunted on a property there, which was an abandoned property nearer the Gulf of Carpentaria but did not see any buffalo that far South. This was quite a few years ago though and in the meantime they were supposed to have colonised further South but then the cull happened.

The most salties I have seen was on the Durack River in the Kimberleys. Seven salties eyes all shining nicley within a hundred metres of our camp neear the bank.

Sweet dreams.

Mickey

I think while salties and fresh water crocodiles prefer different habitats it would be very foolish to trust that fact. The Saltwater crocodiles can travel considerable distances up the rivers and estuaries.

We were further upstream, just over an hour east of Mataranka along the Roper Bar road, then turn left, so a fair distance from the Bar, camped on the opposite side of the wetlands to the River - it was about 20 minutes away in the car. Plenty of (T)uffalo about, a lot with good horns. Thing that amazed me was the amount of bloody cane toads about. I knew they had managed to get up as far as Kakadu so was expecting to see a few but they are thicker there than here at home (Qld). It is going to devastate the native wildlife up there - a real shame as it is hard enough for the little critters to survive there as it is.

If I can get back next year I will be there for sure.

Yeah mate those toads are creating havoc amongst the species that didnt evolve with them but we only need to think of when they were released in Qld (30`s?) much the same thing happened with snakes, goannas etc snuffing it but they have got over it now,so too will the top end species, the good old aussie black crow now has learnt to tip road kill toads over and eat them thru their stomach thus escaping the poison glands on their backs...matter of adapt or die eh!

Good point Gryph, the natives do seem to have adapted pretty well here, just hate seeing half eaten toads lying around the place and knowing that some unsuspecting animal or bird is dying somewhere. Feel the same way about 1080 as I do about toads - it would be great if we could get rid of both.
