I have an Alex Henry falling block 450 3 1/4 with a very light 29 1/2" tube. The shallow Herny rifleing looks terrible and very dark.I haven't fired it because of the cost to gear up to the 450 ctg.but I assume it won't shoot too well. I am considering having a new barrel fitted to match the origional contures. Relining is out according to Redmans relining service of Omak, Wash. because of the very small diameter of the barrel. Can anyone suggest a gunsmith capable of duplicating the origional barrel with the flats at the breech. Thanks AkMike

Can't recommend anyone on your side of the pond, Mike, but if you wish to retain the flats and proof-marks, it should be possible to 'sleeve' a new barrel into the lopped breech-end of the existing barrel, similar to a sleeved shotgun.
I'd get a second opinion on the relining first, though.
...also, try shooting the rifle with soft jacketed bullets, even if you have to borrow the components: you might be surprised. It may shoot OK even though the bore looks terrible, and it will almost certainly 'improve' (at least visually!) with the passage of a couple of hundred jacketed bullets. Tinker has tested the Hornady 350gr SP for relative softness and pronounced it OK for older barrels like your Henry.

Because it doesn't have nice smooth lines, Henry rifling often looked dark and horrible even though it was OK.
Try shooting it.
As to rebarrelling, their is a guy in NZ who can do it easily and well - ex Purdey, qualified gunsmith.
PM me if you want more info and I'll look up the details.

Thanks Guys. Here's a pic of the breech area with the flats. web page I'll see if I can round up some brass and try it out some but it doesn't look very good inside.

Mike, John Wills at John's Workshop is a superb smith in Anchorage who does wonderful things with classic single shots. Take your rifle and go see John.

John has seen it before and you're right he is a wizard with a single shot. Thanks Otto.
