A Double or a Bolt
      #4318 - 06/10/03 10:41 AM

If your rich Uncle Fred died and left you two rifles to hunt with the rest of your life which one would you choose?

A .375 H&H flanged in a Double or a .375 H&H belted in a bolt. Both with scopes and open sights. All of the ammunition you can use for either.

I would take turns, depending on the hunt!!.The double for close work, 150 yards or less and the bolt for everything else

Now now Gibbsy, you're fudging. You can't pick and choose.

Keep in mind that a well regulated double will be as accurate as a bolt rifle at 'hunting ranges'.

A bolt will hold more bullets.

Due cigars go with a bolt action rifle?

Ok, Ok, as I to already have a 375 bolt action, I would take the double as well.
Sorry to offiscate the issue

I'm assuming the question is the rich Uncle left me the choice of one of the two rifles, and that it will be the only rifle I will ever again use.

Well sacrilege that it may be, I would choose the bolt action if it is a nice light Mauser 98 actioned rifle. Light so it can be carried a lot.Accurate and handles well, and suitably scoped for a variety of situations.

Doubles though nice they are don't make good long range plains game and mountain rifles, which a .375 with a good accurate light bullet would do. Nor do they have more than two rounds ready at hand.

Now that bolt paired with a good .450 double would be perfect

make my choice a Mod 70 action and equip it with QD EAW mounts so as to have the choice of scope or iron sights at will.

If both rifles were of similar quality I'd grab the double without even having to think about it!

For the Phillistines who prefer a bolt action what can I say? At hunting ranges (out to 300 yards) a .375 Flanged will shoot as well as .375 Bolt. The Brit standard of 3"/4 shots/100yards is as accurate as needed for hunting.

Reminds me of a time in Zambia when I was talking to a fellow from Florida about our guns for Buffalo. He had a .375 in a Winchester and I had .577 3". He said that he was going for accuracy over firepower.

Three weeks later I found out from his PH that he accurately hit his Buff 7 times . I overfire powered my buff once.

No question about it! I'd take the double rifle in a heart beat, and never look back! I have both now, and the bolt rifle will not do anything the double will not do as well, and the first two shots are miles ahead of the bolt rifle. The third shot is about the same as far as time is concerened, and the fourth shot is faster than the bolt rifle every time if you know how to use a double! With a Q-Detach scope the 375 Flanged double rifle is probably the best ALL ROUND rifle ever made for hunting. You certainly do not want to stand at 300 yds and let me shoot at you with any double rifle I own, even with iron sights. the double is far quicker for tight sittuations, and is adiquate for anything you might want to hunt, and top notch for MOST things you might want to hunt! The exception is praire dog shooting, but I shoot them with a 243 Win heavy barrel varmint rifle! If the 375FL double was all I could use, then I just would quite hunting P-dogs!

It would be the double rifle without question.
And Mac I would just load Hornaday's 220grFP for prairie dogs...and sneak up close.
