Best travel DR case?
      #42993 - 04/12/05 05:43 PM

Who makes the best and strongest travel case for a DR? Butch uses Americase, anyone better? Also does anyone make nice DR accesories for travel or home...ie oil bottles, brushes, tools etc... Butch's Americases are pretty nice with a suede liner, much better then that velour crap. A DR deserves a nice place to rest on the long trip to Africa before it gets its yearly or bi-yearly(hopefully) workout.

Take a look at Galazan's or Connecticutt Shotgun Manufacturing - same firm, or really closely related. I just got a small Christmas catalog from them and some of their cases and accessories were very appealling, as were their prices.

I have an oak and leather case with a canvas cover for my rifle, but it doesn't travel on airplanes. For that I've been using the really heavy black plastic cases. I have a full length case for when I travel with a bolt gun, and my double has been fine in this case, and a double breakdown case for two shotguns or double rifles etc. I've flown to Argentina a couple of times with the breakdown case and all has been well. All was well with the full length case this Oct to Zim.

I looked at whatever Orvis was selling to fit into my duffel, since there is an Orvis store near me. That case was way to flimsy and flexible for my tastes.

bulldog - I think you need two cases. One oak and leather for local transport - but I wouldn't put a DR in anything less than a pelican for air-travel.

Not pretty inside, but it's completely surrounded (on all sides) by foam. There are three 1.5" pieces of foam all sandwiched together.

The first 1.5" layer on bottom, then the middle 1.5" layer (in which you cut out the profile of your gun) then a third layer of 1.5" foam.

It's the best protection you can buy for rough travel.

The longer of their models is shown, but they make a take-down length case as well.

After countless safaris and border inspections Americase or Pelican. Those are the best.

For trips with a single gun I like the Pelican takedown case ... would be impossible to destroy I think. UPS, USPS, and Fedex have not been able to damage one.

Going to Africa with more than one gun I like a TuffPack with the rifles in Boyt takedown soft cases packed inside. Leaves lots of room for other things.

Thanks to all for putting the right name, ie., Pelican, on my "heavy plastic" cases. For the life of me this afternoon I couldn't come up with it.

I have a Pelican case for bolt guns and it is extremely strong...Is the Americase stuff just as strong?

Starlight cases are like Pelican, but with better clasps.

I'll have to check them out some day. I've used lots of Pelicases, and have 2 myself. one long one and one for takedowns. They are rather heavy, but basically bombproof.

My A. Hollis and Son 450/400 3 inch resides doesn't leave homw without it's Americase.

Oak and leather looks good in the trophy room while being admired with your friends and a good single malt, but I wouldn't let a luggage gorilla bounce mine around.

The Starlight cases look great. On the website they have a tank driving over one with no noticeable damage. Don't know if I would try that with my Pelican.

The Americases look nice for a travel case but are they really anywhere near as strong as a Pelican case. I think if I got an Americase I would pack it in my luggage. They just don't appear to have the strength of a stand alone piece of luggage.

Anyone have experience with Dan Walter Cases? Their "Invincible" Case looks really nice and strong.
