Mountain Goat
      #4274 - 28/09/03 12:43 PM

I shot this near record book mountain goat some years ago when I lived in Colorado. The mountain I shot him on was 12,000 feet in elevation and steep and full of loose rocks and shale. My favorite camo clad 7MM Rem Mag with 150 gr Nosler Partitions did him in. This old M700 Remington is a favorite of mine and has been responsible for the demise of a lot of mule deer and whitetails and some antelope.

Another great trophy!

You' right the 7mm Rem Mag is certainly a worthy mountain cartridge.

WyoHunter,is this mountain goat also known as a dahl sheep?I remember reading about it in one of the magazines.I believe getting a permit for it is very difficult and also that it is not easy to hunt.

Iqbal no it is not a Dall sheep, they are similar to the rocky mountain sheep but are generally a white colour and of course have different horns too.

But in reading that post by WH ..what about the 12,000 ft elevation?holy shiit i would be crook with altitude sickness up that bloody high.WY how in the frig do you hunt so high>My mate in TX was telling me he could hardly lift his feet at 10,00ft when he was in the Rockies.

Iqbal.... The Rocky Mountain Goat is the only goat native to North America and is closely related to the tahr and serow. It is not a true goat like the Ibex and Chamois. The Dall sheep is one of the four North American sheep that comprises the Grand Slam. They are found in Alaska, the Yukon and Northwest Territories. It is a true sheep. To see a picture of one search the web for Dall sheep.
Gryphon.... Living in Colorado the elevation didn't have as great an effect on me as it would on a flatlander from Texas.
I lived at 5200 feet so physically I was better prepared for that elevation but no one functions as they would at a lower elevation. You climb some and then rest and catch your breath. You do this over and over till you reach the top!

Permits to hunt Dall Sheep are readily available. They are hunted in Alaska, The Yukon Territory, The Northwest Territories, and British Columbia. A non resident must hire a guide. Generally, hunting Dall Sheep, although difficult, is no where near as hard as hunting Mountain Goat. I salute anyone who has take a Mountain Goat in fair chase.
