The sub eight grand rilfe...
      #42889 - 03/12/05 11:53 AM

I'm looking in the four to eight grand range for a BPE, small caliber nitro, or black powder bore rifle (16b-14b)

Anyone seen anything interesting lately?
I like damascus tubes, hammers, Jones underlever and snap action guns, pinfire would be fun...
I have nothing against centerfire guns or toplevers, but the above notes usually get my attention.

I don't think I'd mess with that one! I had it and its a nice rifle but cross fires 14 inches and locked up with the lightest loads. If you want to spend more money to have it regulated maybe it would work. The 40-82 is a pretty whimpy cartridge also.

Sam,

I think the odds of you onwing that rifle and me responding to a post about it - AND - you and I on the forum this morning is astronomical!

Thanks for the frank report on the gun.

Where abouts are you in NC, I'm near charlotte.

Actually, that's a pretty little rifle. As far as the .40-82WCF being wimpy, it's a great woods cartridge for deer, boar, elk and Black Bear. I have an original 1886 Winchester and original 1895 Marlin in that chambering and it's a killer with smokeless loads and Hawk 270gr. bullets. Naturally, it's not a DG cartridge at all. But, I took an 18 point Whitetail last year with one shot at 70 yds. and he dropped right where he stood...never got up!

Bonanza and Sam-

Thanks for the notice of that rifle, both to Bonanza for pointing it out and to Sam for the warning.

I've heard from others in the past, and in the not so recent past, that that particular shop seems to have some kind of trouble with the truth --like when they don't know it, they manufacture a version of it to suit thier sales strategies-- and I'd really need to be right there to handle and shoot the rifle before I'd put money down for it.

The chambering doesn't bother me at all, and actually would be good for some of what my interests are, I don't need a dangerous game rifle. Blacktail and Axis Deer would be the most likely target of opportunity for that rifle if in a perfect would it'd be mine and shoot well...

Sam, tell me more about your troubles with that rifle.
Tell me about it cross firing and tell me about your attempt to get it to shoot well.
Did you own it before or after that re-stock job? I wonder what the wood-metal fit is like at the head of the stock and the action of the rifle.
I would really like to hear about your experience with that gun. Fourteen inches is quite a bit of difference between barrel groups!
Did you chronograph your efforts with that rifle?
