What would be the lightest you would go on a Searcy 500 NE?

How much worse is the recoil from a normal weight 500? Why 10lb 4oz?

I have a 10 pound 3 oz. .500 and the recoil is fine. In fact I would not mind if it weighed a half pound or 12 ounces less. But that would be about the limit.

My 500 is weighing in around 10 lbs 4 oz (give or take an ounce or two) and I find the gun very easy to shoot and carry.

I might go lighter, like 500grains said, but I have experience with the weight of my rifle and it works fine for me.

I talked to butch and he said that going lighter then standard for his 500 would throw off the balance. What do you guys think? Any way around this.

The balance is subjective to you. Until you try it you will not know. What one person likes another may not. That being said, how would he lighten it up? Hog out the stock, thin the barrels?

My 577 is barrel heavy at 10.5 lbs. By putting a Murray Leather cartridge holder on the stock with 4 cartridges it balances on the hinge pin. The stock was made to my dimensions so whether or not it is a little front heavy does not mean much. I like it a bit heavy as it steadies nice.

At the risk of having rocks thrown at me I have not found Searcy's to be particularly well balanced or handy. I've never had one made for me either so perhaps that is part of it.

I'm looking forward to seeing his new stuff this winter though. It sounds pretty neat. That is if he let's me touch one.

Bulldog, you could shorten or lengthen the barrels to adjust balance a bit.

A mercury reducer in the stock
works well for both balance
and reducer.

I would rather not get a recoil reducer to keep the rifle as traditional as possible. Also if will be fitted to me so recoil shouldn't be a problem.
