Drilled And Tapped Rib
      #42072 - 21/11/05 05:05 PM

I mentioned this before, but since no one responded I am trying once more in hopes that someone might have a good idea of the actual purpose of the two drilled and tapped holes in the rib. The double in question is a P. Webley&Son.

I have seen an Evans with an aperture sight mounted in this area, so I suppose that could be a possibility. Another possibility might be for a scope base, but I question whether the two holes would be substantial enough to support that much weight under recoil .

Ideas?

Thanks,
Jim

Jim
Handled a double quite a few years back which had a bubble spirit level fitted to the rib as a type of sighting aid!!!
That one however was dovetailed to the rib, not screwed.
From memory it was a boxlock Gibbs 450 400 3 1/4".
Others on this site will most likely know that rifle also.

This doesn't help much with your question about the screws in your rib though.

Jim:

When you figure this one out, let me know. I have one with two filled holes just like that, 1.10" apart. Mine are closer to the breechface than yours. I haven't a clue.

400 NE,

The closest I can come to guessing about your situation would be an aperture sight like this one.

I was just hoping that someone might have a better idea than I did . There is always something new to learn (at least for me ).

4seventy,
Thanks for the reply. All ideas are much appreciated. Maybe one day I will find the answer for my Webley.

Jim
