Gang,

The 1927 Christoph Funk 400/350 from Champlins has arrived. You should have seen me, I was like a god-damn kid on Christmas; I could barely contain my exuberance. George shipped it disassembled, so first I carefully inspected it, property lubed all the moving parts with brileys grease and assembled it. What happened next changed my life forever. I mounted the rifle and it felt like a natural extension of my body. For all of those fellows out there who have tried to describe the “feel” of a pre-war double to us who have never owed one – I get it! In my words, I can on think or one: magic wand. Needless to say, the craftsmanship is stunning and the wonderful mechanical sounds it makes compared to my Chapuis and Merkel is music to my ears. Once the ammo arrives the range report to follow.

Dude

Now why'd you have to post that?

I'm jealous as hell, you can at least post some pics to go with it.

bonanza,

Congratulations! You are now well and truly addicted . The only treatment is more vintage doubles. An expensive "habit", but definitely worth it.

Another concert !!!

Congratulations - well done - great calibre and one I have yet to get.

If only we could pass over the forum for everyone to get an idea
what "fit and feel" and "Build quality" actually are.

Again, well done.

Bonanza,

Just had a look at Champlins site and the pictures Description.
Well done - looks absolutely superb - great pick up.

I'd own it anyday. Would make a great light double
for Australia - pigs, roos etc.

I've been doing a little research on the 400/350. They are apparently are quite rare. Many were rechambered/reboared to 9.3x74R - why? The case is easily formed from 9.3x74R.

Also, whoever owned this rifle really took care of it. I intend to carry on this legacy until it's time for the next owner to enjoy it, however it will see field use.

bonanza

I think you are thinking of the 400/360 which is a.366 bore, same as the 9.3. If some were done it would take a rebore, not just a rechamber.

The times it was done were probably because of lack of bullets, not shells.

Mick:

He's right. Quite a few .400/.350s and .350 No. 2s (and .400/.360s as well of, course) have been rechambered, rebored and reproved to 9.3X74R, most in recent years. Paul Roberts in particular has made a specialty of this. It has nothing to do with a lack of bullets.

Paul says that there is a strong market on the continent for British doubles in 9.3X74R for driven boar shooting. Since the British built very few doubles in 9.3, these conversions are the answer. The conversion seems to increase the value of an otherwise nice .400/.360 or .400/.350 by roughly 2500 pounds on the continental market. Once Paul gets his hands on a nice .350 or .360, it gets cut. I saw a pristine Rigby .350 No. 2 best sidelock ejector that had been converted in his shop when I was there last. Made me wanna cry.

I own a Rigby Sidelock in 375 Flanged Magnum that was
done by Paul Roberts.

The guy who purchased it said of all the Rigby's he had on the shelf
it was the only one he had left in 375 Flanged Magnum, all others
were 9.3 x 74R.

It still handles and shoot great but I would like a 400/350 someday.

500 Nitro - have you loaded up any 350gr bullets in that flanged mag?

Just curious as to what kind of velocities are possible and how they regulate with a gun that was probably regulated with 300gr bullets.

new huy

When I first got the gun I shot 3235, 270's and 300grns
in it and I can get them all to shoot to same POA.

Have never tried 350gns in it and probably wouldn't
since it's not proofed for them.
- I am not one to stuff around with a working gun
too much, espcially double rifles.

I have hot 350gns in a 375H&H when they first came out
but to be honoest, except Buffalo and Elephant which is what
they were designed for, I wouldn't have a need for them that
can't be handled by a 300gn.

I concentrate on putting the bullet where it is supposed to go
and they know they have been hit when a 300gn bullet hits them.

Screaming Woman is the English translation of Enumclaw, The Indian name of the nearest town. It's called Screaming Woman/Enumclaw because of the high winds (100mph) that blow off the mountains a couple of times a year.

400. I stand corrected. I have seen a number of 400/360 in Britain and in Germany that were converted but not so many 350's What a waste.

I tried the 350gr in my merkel .375H&H, sent the pressure though the roof. Would be fine in a strong bolt gun.
