Question for our PHs & experienced hunters
      #4179 - 14/09/03 01:55 AM

As many of you will know, I'm mostly an armchair hunter (having bagged several armchairs ). Circumstances have prevented me from making any hunting trips until next year, probably. My question is this:

Rather than engage a PH for the usual package with X amount of trophies in X amount of days, is it possible to hunt simply in order to gain experience of hunting? eg spend a week or so tracking game and shooting one or two, but not for trophies, with maybe the meat going to the PH & his staff or local people?

If this is possible, would it be appreciably cheaper than the normal packages?

Any advice would be gratefully recieved. Thanks

It's possible (in most African countries) to buy a hunt for x amount of days and then shoot whatever animals you like rather than have a package of x days and a set number and selection of species. However most countries have some kind of restriction on some species........... for example Tanzania will not allow you to shoot Elephant, cats and a lot of other species on a 7 or 14 day licence.

Is it cheaper?........sometimes it is, but not always. One way to save money is to take photographs but not have any taxidermy done. This also gives you more hunting time and earlier this year I had a (Brit) client do just that......he managed to shoot 16 animals in 7 days hunting..... although that did give him one hell of a bill for trophy fees! We did however manage to reduce this by selling his unwanted skins & trophies for him.

As with most things in life there's a trade off. What you gain on one hand, you lose on the other.

If you're looking for a less expensive way to gain experience of African hunting then the best way I know to do this would be for you to come on one of my African Master Hunters courses and then stay on for a short hunt afterwards. (plug plug!)

For more details of the course and details of how some countries restrict species to length of hunt etc you might like to take a look at my website. If you would like to see the syllabus of the course drop me an e-mail and I'll send one by return.

Good luck with those armchairs!

H-B

Some outfitters also offer cull hunts, where you can hunt a fair number of game (sometimes 20 to 30 head or more) for a cheaper price than a full blown safari. Usually you do not get to take good trophy animals but it is an alternative. I guess it depends on what you will be looking for and looking to do

One of Shakari's safari options seems to be very nicely priced. It is not one of the "cull" hunt type deals but looks good value.

H-B,

Yes it is possible and can be done however there will probarbly be a price difference when you do shoot a big trophy but other wise you could also hunt a lot of female animals that don't have horns they make nice rugs anyway. A couple of places alos have problems with warthogs and you could end up shooting 20 + warthog in a matter of 2 days now that can be fun.

Maybe I can help you out setting somtehing up for just plain hunting and if we do find a super trophy you could still bag it and pay a different price but yes Shakari as got an good idea of only taking photos and lots of them they also work great.

Thanks guys.

Shakari, had a look at your website and I think I've got one of your brochures kicking about somewhere.

SH, would you mind emailing me some details?

I should stress that none of this can happen until at least mid 2004.

Thanks again everyone

Frederik

I will have to have a talk with you before a future trip.

Two or three days of warthog hunting like that sounds like fun. When I have gone warthog hunting it is very hard to find a good warthog with tusks and it has always taken me many days. But they are great fun to hunt.

When doing this sort of hunt can you still take the tusks - ie if taking inferior animals? Not a shoulder mount just tusks. They would be great on a wooden shield boar tusk mount. Maybe a dozen of them on the top of a door arch.

NItroX,

Yes you will be able to take the tusks with you.
The chances are not good to find a 13" plus warthog but you never know what you bump into in July this year I was driving up a small incline on a farm there is also livestock on the farm and far infron t I thought it was the back of a cow sticking out getting closer I could see it was one huge wartie. I stopped and then he took off he had a very big tusks on him and was huge in body size. If only I could have seen him earlier.

HoneyBadger, give me some time to get some details together and I will gte back to you seems that we have some good time to work with anyway

Now Frederik you are teasing with that 13" warthog.

But it sounds like fun and when oneday I get over there again maybe we can hunt pigs for tow or three days. Maybe bring a bow as well.

PS When I was there last year the property received an enquiry from a Spanish group. They wanted to hunt warthogs and wanted to shoot at least 200 (!!! !!!) while they were there. Perhaps a little "excessive" considering the property had estimated to have only 300 to 400 in total.
