More BC Salmon
      #41435 - 13/11/05 06:24 PM

My fishing buddy Phil.
This is a Chum Salmon, fresh from the Salt. Squamish River.

This is me with Male starting to colour.

Two we kept for Smoking. Probably 12-15 pounds ea.

I hooked over 60, played over 40, landed over 20. I had to break off about a half a dozen when they stripped my Fly line into the backing. The line is worth more than a fish I am going to release anyway.

Nice fish Mick. Were you fishing just below where the Mamquam feeds into the Squamish? I was able to get there for an hour and and a half before I went to work but my reel started acting up. The fishing goods store was of course closed. Others were hitting them hard as well.

First, sorry about the pictures being screwed up, it was late but they are fixed. Phil is the guy I was telling you about who also knows Mauro. Small world.

We were below the Mamquam, about 2 miles from the Salt. A lot of plunkers around but we out fished them 2-3 to one.

Phil went back Friday but the river had come up about 4 feet he said. He went upstream and had another Bonanza day. Pouring down rain so no one else around.

Are you still working in up there? Nice weather for Outdoor Action Scenes eh?

Phil uses an old Hardy on a 15 foot Spey rod. A good way to get your knuckles dusted for sure. His rod is a 10-11 and has a lot of backbone for handling these fish. He has caught some big Kings on it.

My rod is a 8-9 Fenwick Graphite. I have a Browning 'Waterford', They were made in Sweden and are not available anymore but it has a killer disc drag that will stop down anything under 20 lbs. The fish I broke off were way to big for me. I was using 24# leader to the fly from leadcore leader. Those big bucks just took off down the river, jumping every 20 feet until they were gone.

Great fun. I can't wait for the Steelhead to come in this winter. It is supposed to be a banner year.

And at night too. There have been quite a few injuries in the last two weeks at this location. Thankfully we will be out of there on Thursday. Looking forward to working 12+ hours in the rain dampens the desire to fish for a couple of hours before hand. Unfortunately I do not have a fly rod/reel big enough for fishing salmon, so was plunking. It looks like I'll have some time off in Jan., so a Steelhead trip may be in order.

Mick, you are always welcome to join me. When I confirm the dates I'll give you a call. December is still a go and will probably be the Sunday.

Mick, nice salmon. Is that area fly fishing only, or is it permitted to throw hardware at them?

You notice when the SAS guys post their photos they always have a black strip over their eyes.

Some guys use the brim of their cap or a big set of double barrels!

Mick, nice fishes by the way.

To me it looks like neither of you are wearing waders? Cold?

I don't know, I usually only fly Fish. Barb less hooks are required on any gear though.

Chum's just kill fly's. They are very aggressive. Here's an Egg Sucking Leech that was bent 90 degrees by one of them.

Some guys just have friends who don't know how to take a picture.

No waiters, Mate. The water was at least 40 degrees.
