"Take a look at Airbus - an unknown aircraft manufacturer 30 years ago - now they are outselling Boeing by nearly 2 to 1. Whilst it could be argued its a European a/c its is predominantly French.
"

Mainly because the financing is subsidized by the French Goverment! Although the plane is good as well! Maybe because it is also built be the Brits, germans and others! It is assembled in France.
I don't like the french, mainly because they will stab you in the back as quick as look at you!

But when you state: "I don`t like the french, mainly because they will stap you in the back as quick as look at you". What french are we`re talking about here????????.

I will reply to this but, it is the only reply I will make on the subject. I don't want to hijack the thread any more.
I come from old english/irish stock and have a long history of war's with the french (and people thing that only spanish etc have long memories! ). Basically I and a deep reader of history and see that the french have a history of getting into trouble, getting someone to pull them out of it and blaming that person for the trouble in the first place!
Also they will talk of 'honour' and betray their closest friend for it.
The clearest and most enduring example of this is France, 1940. A good start to the study and background of this period is William L. Shirer's "The Collapse of the Third Republic". The dirty deed done in the name of 'honour' in this time are astonishing! And, according to the french leaders, none of it was the fault of the french, it was all the fault of the english!

Grand idea, as I thought this thread was about French rifles not f.....g politics or airbuses.

Those are very nice rifles. The singleshots are not as nice as their bolt rifles though.

Still prefer Duane Wiebe's creations or http://www.waffenjung.de/html/home.html

Weither or not you agree with current political stances and statements made by France, one thing that you must always consider each time you load a cartridge, and once more when you fire your cartridge, is that the French are responsible for that conical bullet hitting what you were shooting at. So in that regard, the statement about nobody copying the French is grossly wrong. Unless of course, you are shooting a muzzle loader with roundballs or using shotshells. I am sure there were more French inventions in the realm of firearms, but that one is a pretty large one and states my point clear enough.

I've seen quite a few French sporting rifles, and really would love to get my hands on a mid-19th century very high grade 16b or 20b pinfire SxS rifle with real-for-real Bernard damascus barrels.

That'd be great!

Keep your eyes out for me...

And FWIW I'm with NitroX on this one, however you feel about politics and however you want to wear your blinders, those pesky French are responsible for the success of the metallic cartridge -- and would seem to have had some great influence on the success of the breech loading sporting arm too.
