Heading To Colorado for elk!
      #4073 - 28/08/03 05:46 AM

I am heading to the Colorado High country for archery elk again next week! I will spend 10 glorious days above 10,500 feet (3200 meters) trying to catch up to Mr. Big, an awesome public land 7x7 heard bull. This is another self guided hunt. I will be sure to post pictures when I get back if I score!

10 days you lucky bugger.

Have fun and good luck.

PS Even if you don't score post some photos if you have them of the countryside and hunt. I imagine the Colorado high country is beautiful and spectacular.

NitroX:

This was last years bull. A 5x6 heard bull. Hopefully I can top this one! At least I will have fun trying I leave in a few days. I can't wait to get to base camp! We stay at 10,500 feet and chase the elk up around 12,500 feet. There are bighorns and nice mule deer at this elevation also. I will try to get some pictures of them if I can. I just have a basic point and shoot 35mm camera. I will see what it can do.

I am back from my Elk Trip. We saw some nice bulls but did not could not get them within bow range. The elk were not bugleing or coming to calls as they did last year at the same time. This made for tough hunting but it was still fun. By mid week we were hit with a big snow storm and the temperatures dropped into the teens where we were camped at 10,500’. Thank God for good gear LOL. The snow never did bring the elk down. They still stayed at treeline and above. They sure are some tough animals! Looks like I will have to try my luck again next year!

Hunting elk is a addictive. They live in some amazingly beautiful areas. Here are just a few of the many photos that I took during the trip.

Ironbuck - I edited your photo references above to remove some spaces to get them working.

Lovely country. Must be great to hunt such a beautiful place.

BUT looks like tough country to bow hunt in.

Thanks NitroX

Hunting this area is always physically tough, but when teh bulls come to cow cows or answer bugles it is not to hard to get them within 45 yards or less as long as teh wind is in your favor.

I saw some outstanding 30" + Mule deer along with a full curl Bighorn there this year. Of course I only had an elk tag LOL. It was relatively easy to stalk within 20-30 yards of the mule deer does and young bucks. They do not see many people up there!

I will be back there this time next year........like I said, it is addictive!

Grypon:

Come on out next September and tag along! The tags in this area are available over the counter so they are always available. I may get a Muzleloader tag next year and use my inline instaed of a bow. We'll see. I do love archery hunting
