I am trying to plan a Cape Buff hunt in Africa this summer and wanted to get your opinions on which country has the biggest/best quality buffalo.

Bulldog,

Those buffalo that Tony mentioned are once in a lifetime trophies and he has two. Amazing! Eventhough I too have hunted the Luangwa a couple of times and really enjoyed it I still think your best chance for a really big buffalo is in Masailand on our concessions. Our stats show our average over 40" for hard boss bulls. This average is including the buffalo just killed to get a lion bait up and buffalo that were killed by 7 day hunters who could not be as descriminating. Like I said on AR check our website.

Regards,

Mark

If I was booking another cape buffalo hunt on price I would still go with Zimbabwe.

But if I was looking for a choice or chance of the biggest, longest horns I would give Tanzania a shot. Can't talk from personal experience though as I have hunted there. But the largest trophies I have seen came from certain areas of Tanzania. Quantity of buffalo being shot may also play a part.

Don't know about Zambia, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana or South Africa.

The big trophies tend to be where you find them! as lucj certainly plays a part and a smattering always seem to come from all over.

Ozzy, if you're planning to go for good Buff this coming summer, you may be too late, unless a cancellation comes up. Most of the top P.H.s and areas are already booked solid for2006, and probably in to 2007. With the major hunting conventions coming up soon, I know it'll be too late. Perhaps it would be better to set your sight on 2007 or 2008 when you have a better chance of getting a prime spot.

From what I've seen and read, for most hunters, a 48 and a 51 incher are a "none in a lifetime". Those are truely special trophies to be cherished.

What are the chances of someone actually taking trophies of that size in fair chase? I'd venture a guess that it's under 5%.

Anyone have any info on buff in SA and Botswana? Also what should I expect to pay for a sable hunt?

I would write off SA and that will narrow down your choices a bit. The buffalo I have seen in Botswana have never been exceptional and as far as price goes Botswana is quite high compared to Zimbabwe where I have had much better success seeing bigger bulls. I shot a 41" in the Omay south last Oct. and saw several other bulls around the 41" mark.

You'll find the trophy fees on Cape Buffalo and Sable to be very, very high in South Africa. For Buffalo, you can figure between $8500.00 up to $15,000.00. Sable bring in the neighborhood of 7 to 10 thousand dollars. I've not hunted Botswana, so I can't comment.

In South Africa that is usually the TROPHY FEE plus the daily rates etc.

N. Tanzania for BIG buffalo and big buck$, and the Selous in Tanz for lots of buffalo...Zimbabwe for the best "low cost" buffalo...Botswana for the most expensive small buffalo. Zambia...??? I don't know...

Be double careful when booking anything in Zimbabwe. Too many unlicensed outfits taking hunters' $$$ and hanging them out to dry.

Bulldog

You've been given some great advise by some folks that have obviously "Been there and done that". My experience bears out just about exactly what you have been told.

RSA actually has some very good buffalo hunting in the areas bordering Kruger park but a 7 day buff only was $16000 this year with our guy there and I believe in '06 the prices will be closer to $20,000. Tanzania is actually cheaper and in some cases much cheaper.

I personally only see 2 reasons to go to Botswana. The first is big elephant and the second is the Okavango. Otherwise the hunting is just as good for the rest of the game in other places and much less expensive. It also is the most featureless landscape I have ever seen. Okavango is great though for a couple of days.

The most reasonably priced sable/buffalo hunts are in Zim or Mozambique (No swamps). $850 per day on a 15 day schedule and a trophy fee of $2500 for the sable and $2200 for the buffalo. Hunts can also be conducted in a total wilderness area. An '06 hunt could be arranged in Mozambique I think.

Regards,

Mark

P.S. Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. Much different atmosphere than the croc infested waters of your neighboring site.

Mark

Could you explain to me what you do? Do you book any hunts outside Africa or with outfitters not associated with Adam Clements?

Didn't you use to work for Safari Outfitters when you were in Alaska?

Am I confusing you with someone else in my porterage?

Mickey,

We do work with a bunch of people not directly associated with Adam. I brought several very good operators to the table myself. I actually handle basically all the NA stuff and we offer some excellent hunts with some small operators for all the western US and Alaskan species. Most of these people I know and have hunted with myself.

Our focus is still Africa and mainly Tanzania since Adam grew up there and really probably knows the business there like no other booking agent. He certainly has opened my eyes.

When I lived in Alaska I was associated with the old Trophy Connection which was in Cody as is Safari Outfitters.

So what I do is spend a lot of time on the keybord and telephone and once in awhile sell something that I'm proud of.

Please excuse my ignorance but what is porterage????

Regards,

Mark

Looks like Africa is quickly becoming too expensive for me. How much does it cost to hunt "Scrub Bull" in Australia? Is it exciting?

Anyone ever dealt with a guy named Alex Lipworth? He is an outfitter for Tanzania.

Alan Moon, named "4seventy" on these forums, "Alan Moon Safaris & Videos" does very attractively priced scrub bull and boar hunts in Far North Queensland. Combine a hunt with a holiday to Cairns, Port Douglas (the playground of US Presidents), and the Great Barrier Reef, perhaps.
