A perfect sundowner on safari, the "Nitro Express"
      #39591 - 23/10/05 02:38 PM

In the search for the perfect safari sundowner, Mehul our esteemed master of cocktails has agreed (I hope!) to lead us on a odyssey into the world of cocktails in the hope of finding the perfect sundowner cocktail, to be named the

"Nitro Express".

This idea began with Mehul presenting us with some interesting photos and comments on a recent double rifle shoot in the USA for the new BGRC and an invitation for members to join him for cocktails.

On this thread

So far we have argued on the base for the cocktail, gin or rum.

Mehul's first offering allowing either base

Something left behind by the British - Planter's Punch

Please try it and comment on Mehul's thread.

What we need for the "Nitro Express" safari cocktail is something like the cartridges, double rifles, the balmy evenings of safaris.

Looking at existing recipes but with a twist to arrive at a unique combination.

Suitable for a warm balmy evening.
Something with a bit of kick.
No umbrellas, floral arrangements or girly drinks.
The colour must be right.
Smooth, not too sweet.

What sort of glass should it be served in? Long and tapered perhaps?
What colour should the result be? Like a brass case perhaps? Or gun metal?

Any thoughts?

I was going to try Mehul's first offering tonight. Lots of gin, rum, vodka, brandy, whiskey, but no OJ anywhere in the house!

It should be able to be served 'neat' as ice is a luxury that 'Real Bwana's' deplore.

NitroX,

I shall wait until the members leave feedback after trying the Planter's Punch recipe. As this is a most serious research project, their opinions would be taken into careful consideration in designing the Nitro Express

Mickey,

One of the most important landmarks in Madras/Chennai is the "Ice House" on the Marina Beach where the British brought ice in on ships and preserved it before selling it for frightfully high prices from the late 1800s until refrigeration became available. If you would like to avoid using ice, do try the recipe without ice - this is a good suggestion to me as I have never tried it this way myself! But the use of ice itself would not be out of place at all as it may have been used for a long time in making cocktails in India.

Cheers, gentlemen and best wishes!

I received my first reply in a private e-mail sent by a friend on these forums. His suggestion:

1. The Nitro Express should be a blend of two alcoholic drinks and not just one alcoholic drink with fruit juice or other non alcoholic drink

2. He enjoys Martinis though he ahs given up drinking it's whisky equivalent, the Manhattan as he feels it is very wrong to mix a good Scotch with Vermouth, a sentiment with which I heartily agree. He has similar views about the Champagne cocktail as both Champagne and Cognac are superb by themselves and do not need to be mixed, again something with which I agree.

So please send more suggestions. This is a careful project needing careful research and I would appreciate all suggestions. Cheers and thanks in advance!

Going to a Halloween Party Sat. Nite. I have been volunteered as a bartender so will try both versions and the one with no ice.

Hopefully I will remember the comments Sunday.

I like this thread.

I'm a Jack Daniels drinker (on the rocks) so I would be partial to anything with Mr. John's spirit in it.

During college I worked at a local Chili's - sometimes as the bar tender.

One night a guy came in and ordered a "Gorilla fart." Couldn't find it in any book and can't remember the mix, but boy did it taste good...

I'm keen on the philosophical aspects of the ingredients,

Nitro for Nitro celloluse or some people think, Nitrogylcerine - a vial of a clear transparent liquid is essential. Handle carefully!

The black pepper was good - for black powder.

The third one I forget. Two nights of booze.

I like the idea of mixing two alcoholic drinks rather than girly fruit juices, but am open to try anyway.

When I was in the service, I made a concoction that was made of the following: 1/2 shots each of vodka, rum, canadian whiskey, and tequila, then equal parts of sour mix and orange juice, and finish with a splash of grenadine. Shake well, and serve in a tall glass with lots of ice.

Okay, I'm up. Last night I mixed up Mehul's two recipes for a Halloween Party. Like James Bond though, they were stirred, not shaken. It was easier in the punch bowls.

Everyone liked it though the Gals seemed to like it most. Maybe the Light Nitro for the distaff side?

Just found this thread. I will have to try some of these recipes. For now though, I drink a tall G&T with half a lemon squeezed into the glass.

Mmmmmmm

Goes good with a warm fire in the wood stove to warm up next to after an afternoon of deer stalking!

Just wondering if anyone has any other ideas?

Here's and easy and tasty Winter drink. As the temp is in the low singles with snow on the ground I have been contemplating running to the store for some ingredients.

1 quart vanilla ice cream melted
1 pound butter melted
1 pound brown sugar
1 pound powdered sugar

mix thoroughly.

Put two tablespoons in tall coffee cup, add 1 ounce 161 proof Dark Rum (I like Hudson's Bay)

top off with boiling water and stir.

Add a dash of nutmeg on top.

Caution: If two strong DO NOT toss on open fire.

I am a fan of rum with juice. That opens a lot of unrefridgerated possibilities in a tropical climate - especially around an evening fire. But for pure luxury to enjoy while admiring your hunting trophies in a comfortable den, I recommend something with South Africa's excellent Amarula Cream.

Amarula is wonderful.
Needs refrigeration after opening though - although I can't remember any being left in the bottle...

Pimms is a classic safari drink but not much of a kick. Tasty with ginger ale though.

This search for the "Nitro Express" is intriguing - better get to work on it!

I just discovered "Rum Cream" on a short jaunt to the Caribbean. It's like Amarula kicked up a notch - like the best eggnog you ever had without the egginess. I am told that it can't be found in the US, but SOMEONE must import it!

Nitro Express

2/3 Premium Vodka
1/3 Bombay Sapphire Gin
Garnish with your choice of (or combination) of Lemon Twist, Onion, Oilve
On the Rocks
In the event of a close encounter of the buffalo kind:
equal parts gin and vodka and omit garnish.

A PH I know mixes Amarula with whisky to give it a bit more punch. I've tried it with OP rum, too, and that's not bad. Vodka would keep more of the original taste.

Gin with lime juice squeezed from a plastic bottle is passable when the tonic water runs out miles from the nearest trading post.

Saturday Night Cocktails ... [Re: NitroX]
      #194969 - 27/11/11 02:13 AM

Its Saturday Night and time to try out Mick's idea of a "postal" competition ... or well ... an internet drinking competition ... actually giving the above a try and reporting back with variations and how well they work.

Doesn't have to be on Saturday Night, of course.

Looking for Suggestions!

The "Nitro Express" - some concepts:

A man's drink but for women as well, no frilly fluffy bits, umbrellas, bits of fruit or that sort of crap. Those can go on other cocktails.

At least two, probably three types of alcohol. Must be tasteful to drink.

Colour? Perhaps black, dark "blue" as in "blueing", gun metal grey, or have these colours in it.

Sources? Should be identifiable with the term "Nitro Express", British, Indian, African origins eg gin, whiskey, amarula, or ? Or part of it has these origins or connections.

Give it a try and have some fun. Feedback please!!!

I would like to see other cocktails created, so different styles, trends may well get accommodated:

"Double Barrelled";
"Simba" or "Lion in the Tall Grass" perhaps "Lion in a Tall Glass" ;
"Tembo";
"Nyati, the Black Death".

Just some ideas for "Nitro Express Cocktails".

I've been drinking the 'Celtic Cross' which is Irish whisky with Drambuie on ice.

Not so much a safari drink, but with a drop or two of red anything I call it the 'Bloody Celtic Cross' and anyone with Highland blood (or any Mick for that matter) will identify with the spirit...

Cheers

Thanks Tinker. That's an idea.

From the facebook pages:

Easy.. Brandy and ginger !!

Which is a good idea. Something with some 'spirit' but also easy to drink, cool and long. Perfect for relaxing after a hunt.

Quote:

Well in the bush when u run out of everything.. Try rum and whatever the hell else u can find. No excuse for running out of rum tho !

Rum, by itself, a little simple. But one of the possible ingredients I forgot to include above.

With spring about to finish and Summer days away, plenty of evenings to try different long cool combinations.
