A young man determined to make damascus barrels.
      #395174 - 22/12/25 10:36 AM

I love damascus barrels. And I've been watching this young man's videos of his attempts to make a damascus barrel. He's getting close enough that he is now trying to incorporate his name in the damascus. A good watch if you like damascus. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GHCcwsk_AA

Alec is great. I do a bit of forging myself (knives, garden tools, ranch repairs) and have always really liked his site. Seems like a very nice young man and his zeal is infectious. I hope he succeeds!

Blacksmithing is a fine hobby for men. A friend of mine bought the equipment from an old forge, and we diligently made plans. However, he's been busy helping his son build his house for years now, and the blacksmithing project just isn't progressing. Maybe in 2026.

Yes, it is. A lot of fun and one gets to make what one cannot find in a store. I make my own hammers and various tools and knives and such.

here you go

well, its open a bottomless pit - once you start forging the knives yourself, you also have to start working with leather and making the knife sheaths yourself.

btw , some of the special tools reminding me on the "ork swords" in lord of the ring.
when making this movis they got a black smith who was making then real and strange looking weapons.

Thanks very much lancaster!!

Yes, it is contagious and it morphs!
I do quite a bit of leather work as well. Holsters, scabbards, stacked leather washer handles, saddle tack, etc.

I very much enjoyed the video on the Damascus barrel making. That's a lot of work! I think blacksmithing would be an interesting hobby. Unfortunately, I don't need another rabbit hole to go down, and I don't think that my carpal tunnel would like it.

I crushed a distal radius in my left (straong) arm last January. Wasn't sure if I'd ever be able todo my hobby stuff again. By God's grace.I'm back at it and also found some exercises that have effectively rid me of beginning carpal tunnel and tennis elbow. So while i still have pain and some nerve issues and two cases of "trigger finger" I'm actually better off than I was. Carpal tunnel is miserable!!!

Thanks very much!

I use exclusively scrap materials. I test before using for hardness, have had a lot of my early work Rockwelled to give me an understanding of what the various types of material demand for heat treatment. I made a bunch of knives for servicemen during GWOT and they wound up all over the globe.

For handles I use mountain maple and choke cherry I cut and pack out of the surrounding mountains here and have seasoned for years, then hardwood scraps from oak flooring and of course elk horn and stacked leather washers.

jep, we collecting old metal for a while now for experiments. my greatest hope lies in old band saws blades with carbide tips. These carbide cutting edges are no longer soldered with brass like it was once but welded, and therefore don't fall off when heated. this means that if you weld these band saws to other steel and then knead them together, these carbide tips will be distributed throughout the material. it must look fantastic.

That is a very interesting idea.
I live in logging country and make use of mill bandsaws, mill round saws (almost never used anymore), chainsaw guide bars and of course truck, pickup and car suspension springs.

For hammers I do buy 1040 and 4140 steel which make very nice hammers.
