My 10 bore double rifle has arrived
      #394901 - 10/12/25 08:14 AM

The 10 bore double rifle has arrived at my daughter's house. I've never seen the charge load on the barrel flats before.

Spot on Casper. Looks in very good condition. No better feeling than when they turn up. Except when you shoot them.

Nice, however 7 drams = 191gr. I thought that was the heavy 12 bore load according to W.W.Greener's 9th edition of THE GUN.
It is the load I used in a 12 bore I had, with "Whitworth Fluid Steel" barrels.
Could be a lighter 10 bore load, of course.
It made 1,550fps with a 14 1/2 bore ball.
I see you got what looks like a Tanner mould for it, as well. Good stuff.

I had it sent to my daughter in North Carolina. The auction house wanted to charge me $300 for shipping and only charged $78 to her. I'll pick it up when I go down next month an fly it back.

Great looking bore rifle. Enjoy! And be prepared to put some ice on that shoulder. 191 grains? Dang.

Very nice! Looks to have been sold on by Wilkes at some point.
What a bonus that it came with a Tanner ball mould as well. What weight and barrel length? How are the bores?

The recoil of a 10Bore rifle with Black Powder? Ah, as they say, 'tis but a maidens caress.

EDIT: Oh, never mind, I found the Ammoskeag listed details….28" barrels and 12 1/2 lbs…..perfect

See if there is a "Webley number" stamped on or near the fore end hanger as that could give a clue to it's manufacture date.

If it is a brass case rifle your only real source for decent brass is Rocky Mountain Cartridge. I'd not recommend the turned brass sold by Track of the Wolf and headstamped "Parker", as those are very thin and weak at the web.
Of course a Paper Case rifle can easily use modern plastic 10Ga trimmed to 2 7/8"

At least it's got some weight. My 12 bore firing that load was only 5 pounds lighter. It kicked rather hard.
