Botswana to continue trophy hunting

BOTSWANA TO CONTINUE TROPHY HUNTING AMID CRITICISM FROM ANIMAL RIGHTS GROUPS

Botswana has reiterated that it will continue allowing trophy hunting despite mounting pressure from both international and local conservation groups calling for a ban.

Speaking at the ongoing CITES conference, Minister of Environment and Tourism Wynter Mmolotsi said Botswana’s natural resources form a strong foundation for achieving national development objectives.

Mmolotsi emphasized that both consumptive and non-consumptive wildlife utilization should continue to coexist, viewing them as complementary avenues for economic growth and rural empowerment. He urged the Conference of Parties to support legal, traceable, and sustainable wildlife trade, warning against restrictive decisions that ignore the benefits to Indigenous People and Local Communities (IPLCs).

The minister acknowledged that Botswana’s conservation success has come with significant challenges. Human-wildlife conflict, he said, remains a major threat to food security and rural livelihoods.

“Human lives are regularly lost, and destruction of property is on an upward trajectory,” he noted.

Mmolotsi added that global economic pressures have not spared Botswana, making it essential for the country to explore new revenue streams to meet its national goals and safeguard biodiversity for future generations.

He highlighted that Botswana hosts a rich diversity of wildlife, including the continent’s largest African elephant population estimated at more than 131,000 as well as endangered species such as cheetahs and African wild dogs.

“Our government continues to allocate substantial financial resources to protect the country’s biodiversity and to cushion its people against the pernicious effects of climate change, land degradation, and pollution,” he said.

Interesting, but the "left" will still disapprove. It is what they do and are.

It is an emotional and not logical issue. We know logically, supported by facts, that sport hunting is the most effective conservation effort in Africa and actually everywhere.

However, without consulting facts, there are a group of people that think hunting is a barbaric sport to make animals suffer. The interesting thing is than many of these people are meat eaters and never contribute money to true conservation efforts.

Maybe Walt Disney corrupted many people with silly shows that show all animals as gentle. well thinking animals, not stopping to think about people badly injured by animals.

With all that said, unfortunately this isn't an issue that is resolved by simple logic.

The Chobe National Park is being turned into desert by the over population of Elephants. I have heard, from different sources that Chobe has anything from 60,000 to 160,000 Elephant. The 60,000 comes from green idiots as that is the estimated carrying capacity of Els for Chobe.

Rangers and other govt sources put the numbers as low as 140,000 to 160,000. I have also seen an interview with a Ranger/Professional Hunter/farmer (Not sure who he was as did not catch entire interview) who showed where the park use to extend to and what is now desert. Botswana, as estimated by some, would have to cull a minimum of 5000 Els a year just to keep the current numbers, in reality closer to 10,000 a year.

I don't know what the answer s but banning sports hunting of them is certainly the answer if they want a desert there.

We had something similar but on a much smaller scale. Red Mountain State Park was overrun by deer with everything eaten that a deer could reach. The deer were basically skin and bones, weighing maybe as much as 60#.

There was a huge uproar when the state discussed culling deer to get the population down to a manageable number. It seemed that some people favored the state bring food to the deer as opposed to managing the deer population.

Of course, those people don't have sportsman (hunter or fisherman) permits so do not contribute to DNR, just want every animal "treated with respect."

The state finally hired "professional shooters" to cull the deer; much to the disappointment of hunters who would have resolved the situation for free.

I live in a large (somewhat blue) city. Many of my neighbors are anti-hunters (but also meat eaters)

Yeah - the hypocrisy is outstanding.
Everyone "knows" that meat comes from grocery stores in nice packages.
