Small Bore Krieghoff Classic opinions?
      #392267 - 02/07/25 02:33 AM

Hi folks,

I've recently returned from a trip to SA and had a grand time, it's been far too long a time away!

I used my friends bolt guns out there, a 308 and 9.3x62...and was impressed by the authority of the 9.3. As you might expect it put tough game down quickly with little fuss.

As a result I've been contemplating a double rifle in 9.3x74R, for general hunting excluding anything dangerous.

My budget is £8-10,000, although If i can spend less that would be preferable. In this price bracket I think the only option to me is a Krieghoff, unless I'm mistaken? I've approached Heym, Merkel and Krieghoff and of the three Krieghoff have been the only ones to get back to me (with some excellent advice and quick replies).

My question therefore for the smaller bore Krieghoff owners...what do you think of your rifles?!

The one aspect I'm wondering about is frame size, are the Classic doubles produced in a range of frame sizes or will a 9.3 be made on the same action used for 500 NE. I'm concerned it'll be heavy and lack the handling a double should have.

Let me know if I should be looking at other makers, Chapuis perhaps?.

You never know Matabele, you may snag a good used be-spoke one over your way which is most likely available over your way!
Even still if you want a new one, hopefully some of our European members should chime in to help you.

I'd even give Bradshaw a go - very interesting & super strong.

Also try Sabatti, as few of my BGR colleagues have them & have no issues.

I've heard of AYA, perhaps worth a bell.

Thanks for the reply. I've been keeping my eye peeled for a used one over here, but so far they have all been big bores. Appreciate the suggestions, cheers! I did in fact get in touch with AyA as their shotguns have always seemed decent value, fingers crossed their prices are reasonable for a double.

All the best mate!
Hope you score one way or another & that you're happy with your new found prize!
You'll know when it's in your hands, I have a Merkel 140AE in 450-400, great fun to shoot & doesn't kick all too hard - another calibre to think about

One of the guys in the BGRC has a Krieghof Double in 30-06 and is very happy with it. I have been to the factory and they certainly make a high quality product. Unless specially ordered with ejectors (Quite expensive) they will be extractor only.

Here is an interesting video of the factory and how the guns are made, quite detailed:

Chapuis are excellent and come standard with ejectors, extractor being optional. I have one and love it, very accurate. In the BGRC they are by far the most popular double bar none.

I have long wanted a 450/400 too, in fact I almost bought a single shot falling block in one thinking I could load lighter .40 bullets for practice and smaller game. Life happened in the interim but you've got me thinking again...my bank account is already cowering in fear!!

Thanks for the youtube links Matt, Krieghoff are an impressive outfit that's for sure! The local Krieghoff dealer has told me the classic doubles now come with ejectors as standard and are included in the base price, which is reassuring to know.

Thats good to hear that they now come standard with ejectors, obviously as everyone else has ejectors they would have had to follow suit.

I assume the falling block you were looking at was a Ruger No.1 ?

I'd be including the Chapuid in my considerations.

In brands which have different action sizes, usually the 9.3x74R is the upper end of one range and the .375 or larger, the smaller big bore range.

If I wanted a o.3x74R, in affordable choices, I'd look at the Chapuis, Sabatti, but carefullyat the last. Merkel, I suspect might be a larger action?

I'd seriously search for used. You might be able to test shoot them. A big plus for the decision.

I'd look at, I did, the Valmet/Tikka U/O. Ugly but works. I bought a 9.3x74R double with a set of shotgun barrels for maybe $1500. Later a .30-06 DR set and two combinations 12b/.223 and 12b/7x65R.

But the Valmets go when advertised very quickly.

Heym has about seven different action sizes. A higher price range.

An advantage of the Krieghof design is the decocker safety. If it functions quietly.

I've long thought such a design is very useful for a OH carrying a double rifle all day chambers loaded. A much safer carry method than ordinary safeties. Of course the same for the non PH hunter. Carry a chamber loaded DR more safely. But still loaded for quick use.

Ideally I'd choose such an arrangement if it works quietly and easily, for my "ideal DR".

The Krieghof does have a particular Teutonic styling, curved pistol grip..

Matt, the single shot was going to be a custom by Ralph Badenhorst, a gunmaker in SA. He makes his own actions although It was a clone of the Ruger No.1.

Thanks for the reply NitroX, I have in fact chased Chapuis up for some prices.
