That is one sweet looking rifle. I do like the Enfield Actions and the grain in that stockis how I like it.

Great looking old rifle, congratulations!!!!! I am just curious, can you tell a big difference in the recoil with the “coil check” stock? I know you have shot quite a few big bores. I visited with Art back in early 90’s and he felt they made a big difference but I have never shot one. Thanks, Robert

I have seven rifles in 416 Rigby caliber. One is an original A-Square. When shooting all the 416s at an outing to the range, the A-Square with its Coil-Check stock had less felt recoil than all the other six, by about half. That stock design really works.

WOW !!!! That’s impressive. I guess Art really knew what he was doing. Too bad they are no longer making them.

Another nice big boomer for you buckstix. The scout scope mounting is an interesting one. A couple of images of Hannibal rifles in an old A-Square catalogue I have, one with the Coil-Check wood stock and the other with the synthetic stock option show both with scout mounted 2x Leupold EER scopes. The scopes are mounted with the objective lens level with the back of rear sight base and the ocular lens further forward over the receiver ring.
It seems the 2.5x scope (make?) on your Hannibal is a different setup. Would it be an original scope and mounting by A-Square for a client or a later addition by an owner?

Not sure where the objective lens itself is positioned in the tube but wouldn't be ideal if at the front of the tube under the ring. Would need to be careful not to crush the lens if ever tightening the ring. Has been known to happen.

The scope is unmarked except for 2.5x20 ... Pretty sure it came that way from A-Square since the front ring has a lever release for easy off-on removal ... Something I have only seen on A-Square rifles from the factory. I have had 3 original A-Square rifles with that type of rings.

The rings are original Leupold ones fitted to the Hannibal for their long eye relief scope option but the scope is a Simmons 2.5x20 #21005 shotgun/rifle scope. As can be seen from the image below the name on your scope has either worn off or been removed and the Simmons is a replacement for the original Leupold scope. I doubt A-Square would have fitted cheap Simmons scopes to their Hannibal rifles.

I have a nice original Leupold 2x EER scope on my Mauser 404J which would work a treat on your Hannibal but unfortunately we are in the wrong countries to do a deal.

A stock designed to 'check (reduce) recoil'

The A-Square stock is a heavy chunky piece of wood with straight comb and large butt area fitted with equally large recoil pad all going to tame recoil of the larger big bore cartridges A-Square made their rifles for including their own proprietary big bore cartridges.

Nice easy load especially from a heavy gun.
Same load ballistics in a Marlin kicks a bit more.

Hope you have lots of that “5744” cause there isn’t any of that on the shelves. I hope they start making it again, it’s the perfect powder for comfortable loads in the big bores.
Glad you’ve got it shooting, congratulations!!!!

YES ... I only have two 8 pounds kegs, and seven 1 pound cans left. I am 73 and hope they last till I die. Its the best powder for all 25 of my big bore rifles.
