That questions gonna attract some real BS answers......I've no doubt that sooner or later some clown will tell you the .??? super duper express magnum is far and above any other calibre on earth..... the truth is no-one has ever done a comparative analysis of every calibre or every bullet etc...... They'll all do the job if you put the right bullet in the right place and none of them will do the job if you get that combination wrong.

Hatari,

I don't think there is a "best" calibre.

All mentioned by you + many others will do the job.

I also totally agree with Shakari - even if you hit an
elephant in the foot with a 700 Nitro, it ain't going to do anything
but piss it off and have it piss off out of the area.

I personally think hunters should concentrate on hitting the animals
in the right spot.

In addition, not that many can handle the recoil of the calibres you
mentioned - especially if they practice beforehand.

Hatari,

I've not hunted ele or hippo with any of the calibers you listed. I have hunted buffalo and a host of other big game with the 505 Gibbs and 500 AHR though. I agree 110% with the comments made by the other gentlemen on this thread though, in that all the cartridges you named will kill just as effectively IF you place the appropriate bullet in the appropriate place. It is important to understand that all these cartridges can easily destroy an inappropriate bullet.

So my two cents worth is.

1.) Use the appropriate bullet (solids of a premium nature I should think)
2.) Place the bullet in the appropriate place.
3.) Only use one of those shoulder held artillery peices IF you can accurately do so ie be proficient. Otherwise, there are several "lesser" cartridges that will also work.

Yes,I understand very well, but when I say "best caliber", this is the caliber without problems- Feeding cartridges in the barrel ( a problem wiht the .500 Jefferey, I think due to rebaded rim,)etc... in the field sometimes it's dangerous before a charge of elephant !
I agree with you the first shoot is the more important.
Thanks you.

Hatari

Feeding cartridges in the barrel ( a problem wiht the .500 Jefferey, I think due to rebaded rim,)"

Original 500 Jeffries did not have this problem (from people who owned them)
I have an exact copy from an original 500 Jeffrey and it doesn't have any problem.
I know of numerous custom built 500 Jeffrey's that also don't have any problem feeding
(both Mauser 98's and Brno's (CZ) 602's and 550's).

I think the "problem" feeding 500 J cartridges from the magazines is because the gunsmith's
of custom rifles didn't take care to see how it was done and let the gun out without testing it.

That is not to say that having a rebated rim is good, just don't blame the cartridge.

Hatari,

In that case I find I must agree once again with 500Nitro, in that feeding issues are due to improper/inadequate gunsmithing than they are of the cartridge itself.

Assuming equal shooter proficiency, equivalent bullet construction and sectional density, and equal muzzle velocities the larger calibers should outperform the smaller ones. I think the real issue however revolves around shooter proficiency.

cr500,

How many 600 OKs exist in the entire world, 4 or 5? I don't think any have been used on anything besides, deer, pigs, and perhaps an elk cow.

I personally doubt that there would be a significant difference between the 600 OK and a 600 NE. Further I believe you would probably be hard pressed to tell it's terminal ballistics apart from any of the .577 bores (577 NE 3" on up to be specific). I also do not doubt it tears things up better than the 0.5" bores do. Finally, I doubt that there are many people on the entire planet than can shoot it proficiently enough to properly hunt with it.

Having said all that I too am interested in hearing how it does on truly big and/or dangerous game.

Well since I have a 505 Gibbs, I would have to go with that!!
