Territory Duck Season
      #39186 - 16/10/05 10:56 AM

The drier than normal conditions in the Northern Territory this year have concentrated the ducks on a small number of waterholes which have not yet dried up. We had a challenging time the other weekend 'down the track', trying to pick a few teal out from amongst the huge flocks of whistle-ducks, with limited success!

Here's a mixed bag of grey teal and whistlers from an afternoon session on a fast-receeding lagoon:

I managed to snap an interesting pic of this flaring teal by holding the digi-cam on the rib and swinging through the bird. Probably would have shot behind, though, if I'd slapped the trigger!

These photos will give an idea of the enormous numbers of whistle-ducks concentrated on the remaining water:

Chasseur:
The shotgun is a Cashmore sidelock 12-bore, choked full in both barrels. That makes it a bit of a handicap for ducks (especially with bismuth!), but it is primarily my goose-gun. However it fits me so well that I end up reaching for it even when ducks are the likely quarry.

That Cashmore is one of a composed pair, the second gun is identical in every respect (including engraving) except for the chokes, which are more open, and overall condition which is a little down. One day I will refurbish the second gun and case the pair together. Serial numbers are only a couple of hundred apart. Marvellous!
