Back from a fantastic trip to Lodi- pictures added
      #38959 - 10/10/05 12:56 PM

I have just returned from the BGRC of America shoot at Lodi Wisconsin and cannot express my thanks to the NE members and Ernie and Gerri Stalman for making such a fantastic success out of the event. CCSO in particular is to be thanked for getting me to shoot a number of double rifles including his extremely beautiful 9.3x74 Artesanis Ego, a 500 and 577 BPE and two different 450-400s in addition to two different 375 magnum boltguns, one of which belongs to him and the other to Ernie. I had been recoil shy before but thanks to CCSO and Ernie's encouragement, I have a new aim in life - to shoot more big bore rifles. I just loved it!

I would recommend that whoever missed the event tries to come along the next year. There is NO WAY anyone would be disappointed. I have made very good friends for life and the only negative point that I have has been the neccessity to kick myself for not having attended the last two shoots.

Photographs and detailed commentary to follow - I must get some sleep now because I am tired. I know that I shall have some of my life's most pleasant memories to help me get a fantastic night's sleep.

Good hunting, gentlemen!

Yours truly shooting a 577 BPE

CCSO with his incredibly beautiful and accurate Artesanos Ego 9.3x74R sidelock. This is a 100 yard group which won him the prize.

And the wonderful people who made this happen - Ernie and Gerri at lunch. He is 6 1/2 feet tall and with a fantastically understated sense of humour. The lady cooks better than anyone I know and she shoots buffalo with a hammer Rigby. There's no way you can't love them!

These pictures will also be posted on other forums. But there are more to come which will be posted on these forums alone. Please wait for the prints to reach me.

Best wishes and good hunting - hope to see as many as possible next year!

Sounds great-

When I saw Lodi in the thread header, my first thought was that I was sorry to have missed you while you were out here.
Seems that there was a double rifle championship shoot up near Sacramento this weekend, I'd thought of going but stayed around the fort to get things squared here instead of goofing off away from town.

Looks like you found a Lodi near you and double rifles to boot.
Is that the 577 in the photos?

Tinker,

The California match was sponsored by Butch Searcy and it is a different club that organises them. I am sure that that too would have been fun. Since I am in Chicago, it was easy to drive to Lodi and have fun there.

I shall be travelling to LA - it is one of my favourite cities in the world - and shall look forward to meeting good friends from these forums the next time I am there. If you visit Chicago, you are most welcome to have dinner at my place after cocktails - my other hobby after guns and shooting.

Best wishes andd good hunting!

Fantastic!

Perhaps I'll have to box up the two sixteen bore pinfire double rifles and get them out your way so you can really feel the roots of metallic cartridge double rifles.
I really dig these things, today I recieved a leather case for the short barreled gun, it's got just the right look for it and fits nicely.

When are you going to make it down to LA?

Tinker,

Your rifles would be a superb addition to the others at the match. I would hope that you bring your MAhillon 375 too when you come.

I hope to visit LA either by the end of this year or early in January if all goes well. I shall definitely let you know in advance and we could catch up for some drinks when I am there.

Best wishes and good hunting!

Chasseur,

It was a fantastic time that we had there. Do try and make it the next time - it would be great to have friends coming in from the North East. I can guarantee that you would really enjoy the trip.

Good hunting!

Mahillon [Re: mehulkamdar]
      #39096 - 13/10/05 01:12 AM

Do note Mehul-

My Mahillon is a presentation (some lucky royal gent of high breed... prince I beleive) grade pinfire cased damascus two barrel set double rifle/double shotgun.

I had just brought it into the conversation when the other guy with the .375 mentioned his.

I'm still very enthusiastically awaiting word from Brussels on wether or not that shop -really- has the Mahillon records and wether or not they can offer me any information on my particular gun or others like it from Mahillon in that period.

Tinker,

I still haven't heard from La Maison du Chasseur though I am in touch with a friend who is working on a history of gunmakers in French speaking countries. We should have some progress soon, I hope.

From your description of your gun you must show it off at Lodi next year. It would be like turning up with Selma Hayek on your arm!

Best wishes and good hunting!

Vikram,

Since you are going to visit us and stay at my place sometime, you know when you should visit so that you could also take part in the shoot. Keep an eye on these forums and we'll have a great time next year as well. I hope to mix cocktails if I am allowed to - all your favourite Nizam Club recipes would be on hand if I could manage the ingredients.

Good luck and good hunting!

Mehul

Thanks for posting these photos and the comments on the North American BGRC event.

It looks like good fun for everyone and a great venue to look at other peoples rifles. Maybe even shoot some too .

At a local shoot I attend each year, the standard motto is

"We all shot extremely well."

I really do think a shootable BPE double rifle must be on the future cards for myself oneday. They look like so much fun and nothing beats great clouds of blackpowder smoke coming from two barrels.

So you are also a true connoisseur of the sundowner. Very Pukka!

I need you to invent the "Nitro Express" a signature cocktail perfect for sundowners on safari in Africa or India, double rifles and leather, balmy evenings and beautiful women.

We can collaborate.

Just for you, Mehul...

A little detail of that Mahillon.

I have tried a bit to get ahold of the folks out there in Belgium too. Seems the man at the Hunting House may be out in Paris tending to a shop he's reported to have bought.
We'll just have to see.

NitroX,

Ernie and CCSO were extremely generous with their rifles and encouraged several of us who turned up with pedestrian guns to shoot their rifles. It was a fantastic event!

As far as the cocktails are concerned, I would be more than happy to experiment and to share recipes with anyone interested. I did mix some at parties that some AR members hosted and everyone had a nice time. The Brits lost a lot when they left India and we have preserved the recipes for the world to enjoy.

Should the "Nitro Express" be a rum or gin based cocktail? Most Raj era cocktails use one of these as their base...

That is one fabulous rifle! Do bring it to Lodi next year if you attend the shoot. I can assure you that it would attract a lot of attention and happy compliments.

Good hunting with it!

Maybe we could start a new topic in the booze forum. Post suggested recipes for the "Nitro Express" cocktail and everyone could try them and chime in. Then arrive at a (drunken) consensus.

Mick voted for a gin basis which is nice, but seeing Australia in colonial days once used rum as a currency I do have a leaning to rum myself.

Maybe we can have one of each, the "Nitro" and the "Express".

One of each please sir. (hic)

Why not both Gin and Rum.

We drink Gin in Summer to cool down and Rum in winter
when it's cold and you need a warm up.

I vote Bombay Saphire as the Gin Base.

The family was sitting around a table drinking late one night talking about our the lives of our forefathers.
We'd gotten back to the group of mayflower landing party record and had been laughing about one guy in particular (I think I somehow got his traits...) who was constantly in some kind of silly trouble or pissing the law off.

We had numerous records of his business deals too, many of them as laughable as his follies elsewhere in life.

One in particular was the trade of a donkey for a case of rum. He'd noted that the donkey was especially nasty, but the rum was found to be especially sweet...

On that note, I could care less as to what's the base of the cocktail besides the fact that I could care less still as to who manufactured said booze.
The formula of the cocktail should be so good in itself that whatever specific quality of whoever's booze is used won't make a rat's ass of difference in the end product.
We're talking about a cocktail designed to be used in rough bush conditions while in-country on some very dark land.

Like the rifles used on the game found out there there should be very little room for mistakes. This should be a cocktail with fairly generous chambers and a weighty action, it should come to mount fast and have a clear sighting system for when the shooter's eyes have gone tired or bloody.
The rapid dispatch of two of these cocktails should drop the toughest game, and for what it's worth there should be design of a stopping cocktail for tougher game which still stands after taking a well placed pair of this cocktail.

Gin?
Rum?

Fekkit. It's not the ingredients, but the formula that's imoportant on this one.
