Irwin influence stopped croc safaris, MP says

A Northern Territory Labor MP says the Federal Environment Minister appears to have consulted only one expert before making his decision on crocodile safari hunting.

Senator Ian Campbell has refused to allow the export of the crocodile skins, which are deemed crucial to starting a trophy hunting industry in the Northern Territory.

The decision has been condemned by members of his own Liberal Party, the CLP, the Territory Government and crocodile experts.

Labor's Member for Lingiari Warren Snowdon says it is clear where the Minister is getting his advice.

"He was seen wrestling with Steve Irwin, I mean he's his guru. He's on Australian national television cuddling a crocodile with Steve Irwin and that gives him some basis for knowledge," Mr Snowdon said.

Mr Snowdon says the decision is further evidence the CLP is ineffectual in Canberra.

He says if the CLP's Member for Solomon, Dave Tollner and Senator Nigel Scullion had any power in government, they would have convinced the Minister to change his mind.

"I don't know what the CLP exists for anymore in the Northern Territory frankly because at the federal level they're obviously a joke," he said.

"No one takes any notice of them because if you were advocating on behalf of the Northern Territory strongly, you would obviously stop these sorts of decisions.

"They have shown they have no power to influence decisions made by the Federal Government, repeatedly."

The most recent croc attack a couple days ago.

Girl tells of escape from croc's jaws

A 10-year-old girl has told of her terrifying ordeal after being attacked by a crocodile while swimming in the far north of Western Australia.

Chantal Burnup's family says she was saved by her older brother who bashed the animal with his fist.

Bearing the scars of her lucky escape, Chantal has described how she was mauled by a three-metre crocodile.

She was swimming in a lagoon near Doubtful Bay north-east of Derby when the animal attacked.

"My dad and my brother had jumped in, I jumped in a little while after them and I turned around to call my dog and something grabbed me underwater," she said.

"I tried to get it off me and my dad pulled me out of the water and he pulled me back onto the rocks."

After being dragged underwater, Chantal's father managed to pull her from the crocodile's jaws while her brother, Simon, beat the animal away with his fist.

"By that time I had got out of the water and was watching and dad was shouting at me to help so I got back in and smacked it on the head," Simon said.

The girl suffered wounds and lacerations to her arms, back and chest.

After spending the night at a remote cattle station she was flown to Derby Hospital.

Her mother, Gabrielle, was not present at the time of the attack but flew to her daughter's bedside.

"I just couldn't imagine that a crocodile could grab her and she would be as alright as she is, she is so little," she said.

Local crocodile expert Malcolm Douglas says the area is infested with crocodiles which are extremely territorial at this time of year.

"I wouldn't go swimming there for a billion dollars ... that's one of the biggest crocodile populations in the Kimberley," he said.

Mr Douglas says tourists and tour operators need to be better educated about the dangers of crocodiles.

Govt criticised over croc safari decision

A Territory tourist operator who was hoping to run crocodile safaris says she is dismayed the hunts will not be allowed to go ahead.

Federal Environment Minister Ian Campbell today rejected a Territory Government proposal to allow trophy hunters to shoot 25 crocodiles each year.

The minister said too many older animals could be shot, potentially increasing the number of young rogue crocodiles.

But Marlee Ranacher from Bullo River Station about 350 kilometres south-west of Darwin, says that is simply not true.

"Has Mr Campbell come up and had a look? I don't think he has," she said.

"And it is a statement of ignorance to say that especially when you haven't checked and you haven't been up here and you haven't listened to all the people who do live and work up here."

Ms Ranacher, who was hoping to run crocodile safaris, says her dismay is more than just self interest.

"That hunter will buy a Qantas ticket he will buy tickets to go down to Sydney," she said.

"He will hire a charter plane to fly out here. A taxidermist will get a job.

"He will in all probability bring friends and or family who will go to Sydney and or Melbourne. The flow-on effect is huge."

The CLP's Member for Solomon Dave Tollner and Senator Nigel Scullion have already attacked the Environment Minister for ignoring the views of Territorians.

Queensland Liberal MP Warren Entsch is a former crocodile catcher and farmer.

He says the decision is based on emotion and wrong information.

"If he came out and said I'm just fundamentally opposed to killing any creatures for profit then okay I could accept that, but I mean that's not the case, I'll certainly be raising it with him and I would expect the Northern Territory Government would probably put in an appeal," he said.

Leading Territory crocodile expert Graeme Webb says the Federal Government's reasoning is deeply flawed.

Professor Webb says the minister does not realise older crocs do not teach young ones, they eat them.

"The other issue of course is that we, Australia shouldn't be seen as hunters and shouldn't be seen as hunting iconic animals and yet we cull six million kangaroos each year," he said.

The Northern Land Council also says the Federal Government has got it wrong in rejecting the safari hunting of saltwater crocodiles.

The NLC's Norman Fry says anyone can see there are too many crocodiles in the Territory.

"Generations now today, young people today can't do the kinds of things that I was able to do as a kid and that is swim in billabongs and creeks with relative safety," he said.

ABC News related audio

The Federal Goverment says reintroducing crocodile hunting would be inhumane and would send a perverse signal about the Australian attitude to the environment.

He said that us, being amateur's, we couldn't be sure of a killing shot! I would think that most of the cattle killers are shot by station hands using what ever's in the ute at the time

Seems being a pro shooter make you a better shot

What exactly is the law? Does it just state that the skins cant be exported? If this is the case ,then it will be OK for Ozzies to shoot them. Is this right? Not that I will be paying $1000 a foot myself.
