Oh Oh here is a video about the "BEST British gunmaker", their words not mine. And their first claim to fame is that they glue their double barrels together. Because I have to yet watch the entire video I won't offer any comments

Gallyon's

Update: watched the whole video. Interesting. Nice stuff. Is it the best, that assessment would be far above my pay grade. Will the adhesives work forever? Well nothing is. I wish them well.

Interesting video. Amazing the amount of hand work by expert master gunsmiths and stockers that Gallyon invests into each gun.

I remember 2 remarks from the video (if I am wrong please correct), they mention 250 hours work in a gun and then 50,000 pounds for the more or less standard grade price, they had a name. Well just noodling on that I would guess their labor cost is about 100 to 125/hour. So labor cost is aprox 25000-32250. Materials: 1000 for steel and 500-1000 wood. Cost per 26500-34250. Markup would be 23,500-18750. That has to cover all the fixed overhead costs like building, office and management personnel, taxes and profit, if any. I would say their estimation of hours per must be somewhat less or cost per less.
I think you could run and sustain a business on these numbers as long as purchases are steady and an economic recession doesn't occur. When you are in the luxury business, it is fickle

Haven't watched the video but I would like to talk to one of the gunsmiths as to how much they're paid. I've been in the trade since graduating school at Trinidad class '79. First job was at Sport Service Center , P.T. Haberly owner. I ended up being the stock department and also helped with the pistol repair. It was in Chicago so that ended when I had a chance to go talk to the folks at C.Sharps Arms, J. Shoffstall owner , outside of Big Timber Montana. Said always looking for a good stock maker so I threw everything in my truck pointed it west and headed for the Rockies, that was in '81. Got the job and been here since. Now this Montana with it's "famous" low wages, there were lean times for the company we really took a hit on wages to keep things going. It' never been the road to riches, not as an employee any way. I was making guns that no way I could afford, custom '74 Sharp's, but you do that work in spite of the money, but it's what you do, it's what you care about. There's no way I can see that they have 100 to 200 pounds labor, which in American dollars is about twice the amount roughly, even with payroll taxes and all it must be grossly inflated by managment parasites. Again I'd like to talk to the 'smiths actually producing the work, be interesting.

450 Express, I should clarify when I say 100 pounds for labor. That 100 pays for much more then the actual wages to the personnel. There are many expenses attached to having a person working for you then just the money they get. For example health insurances, benefits like retirement, etc. Every employer gets paid part of that because he offers the smith a place to work and the work itself. I no way know all of the costs but to agree with you, gunsmithing is not a get rich profession but can be a most satisfying's one. I chose to be a toolmaker and then an engineer and got my gun making pleasure on the side. I truly loved the toolmaking and then engineering.
I very much hope Gallyon does well for many years to come.

That’s a very interesting film, with some fascinating technology. Room temperature curing was not something I expected at all!
