Bugs on safari
      #388287 - 17/12/24 03:40 PM

Bugs on safari, the tiny ones.

I was thinking of the plandemic and the banning of a cheap cure hydroxichloriquine or whatever it is called. And the fact I think i took it for malaria prevention back in the 1980s. Gave me very vivid dreams, very realistic. Never got malaria though on the cross Eastern and Southern Africs trip. Nor subsequent trips.

I have picked up other bugs though. More to follow.

We've travelled in some remote places, wetlands of the Top End and North. The Nile. The Zambezi. The Amazon. The Gangis. And places in between.

What "bugs", rashes, infestations, have you picked up?

The short and common name for hydroxychloroquine is Doxy. Gives some people weird dreams others not so. Some brands make you drowsy/lethargic. Also makes the skin sensitive to sun light which leads to sunburning easily It was originally developed as an anti-acne drug. Not good for you if taken continuously over a long period. It certainly is more pleasant to take than Quine.

I contracted Malaria as a kid. Came down with it once we were back from 2 years in PNG. Would of picked it up on our way home when we stayed in Port Moresby for a week on the way home. No Malaria mossies in Mt Hagen. Back then there were two types of Malaria, a reoccurring and non-reoccurring type. I, thankfully had the non-reoccurring type. Now Drs tell me that all Marlia is reoccurring. I tell them that both my father and I had the non-reoccurring type and there are no signs in the blood when tested for it.

Guys; I think you are confusing Doxycycline (Doxy) and Hydroxychloroquine. Two different drugs, however both are used to treat malaria.

Back when we were shooting up the ground squirrel population near Horsefly B.C. we used to drink Tonic water as a thirst quencher. It was a great thirst quencher and had some Quinine in it, although not needed.

You are correct. My stuff up.

Daryl, the Tonic water and Bitter Lemon were popular in PNG when I was there as a kid as both have Quinine in them.

I've managed to pick up malaria 3 times, vivax thankfully. First time was on doxy in PNG so symptoms didn't present till a few months later back home. The carrier mozzies are present in Darwin so I had to quarantine. Subsequent infections I felt coming a mile away!

For me, doxycycline was just another word for flatulence!

And sometimes the mosquitoes are like a cloud swarm, so thick one can hardly see through them. Small exaggeration.

One of my stories for this thread. The first tIme I hunt water buffalo with Matt Graham. In the coastal wetlands, lots of mosquitoes. His camp had mosquito nets around the dining area and kitchen.

Hunting the buffalo, mosquitos would land on your bare arms, and chest. Brush them off. Bare skin sprayed with repellant. I didn't realise there were dozens sitting in my back. The sweat soaked cotton shirt proved no barrier to their suckers. Over the hours hundreds of bites to my back. Buffalo down. Three days later in Darwin, my back was one big continuous bite, hundreds combined. Hot and cold showers to try for some relief. Two bottles of stingoes.

Thankfully nominfection, no mosquito carried diseases.

But I felt high for several days.

As Marrskai could tell you, sometimes the mosquitoes arecsonthick on the air. The worst I had it was in thecWest of the Top End, on a water soaked cattle property. Hunting pigs entering one copsevof paperbacks or similar, it was like smoke drifting around one. It wasn't my turn soni chickened out and sent back to the vehicle several hundred metres away where they weren't so thick.

Not hunting but a boozy hockey weekend just out of high school. We wwre camped next to the RAAF team, and boozed all weekend. I was bitten about 160 times at least.

Funny thing for several years after if bitten say three times, the bite would turn into a two ir three inch mosquito bite circle. Some residue from the multiple bites must have remained in the blood for years.

Mosquitoes love me. I get bitten in a tent 160 times. The other guys a handfull each. Hitbred rich tasty blood.

In Africa it's smart to avoid getting bitten. Best way to avoid picking up malaria or nasties. More bites, a higher chance of something, no matter what pills one is taking,

I've always got a lot of mosquitos seasonally on the farm. I've got lots of high grass currently. No sheep or cattle. It reminded me on what the Aboriginals used to do. They'd burn off the grasses at the right time. Great reduced mosquitos anfbbugs for people living in rough shelters and hide clothing. The new green grasses would encourage game into the burned areas. Fingers crossed, no bushfires with my high grasses. Slasher is broken and needs repairs.

Lots of people seem to,luck up malaria in New Guinea. My wife's uncle, a copper stationed there, did as well.

Apparently 0 blood type is an attractant for them.
I'm 0 positive and I have 4 electric bug bats at summer camp at the lake. 2 inside and 2 outside the trailer. For a short while last summer, I have to have one in the boat for when I just happened to be close to shore. They found me. Worse at the horseflies. Can't even feel them land - they re huge, but they draw blood. They don't fly very fast though and are easy to fry with the bat.
Good thing about wasps, is they grab the screen and try to sting it. Fries them too.

In Egypt I picked up some "bugs". From the Nile I believe, I had a rash develop which was a three inch circle near my left elbow pit. For over eleven years during hot humid weather it reappeared. Maybe a new disease which could have been named after me?

Constant diahorea of course. Foid hygiene is really bad. Dirty pigs wipe their arses with their hand. Worst I had was a Scandinavian sourced meal at the Cairo Hilton. Almost blew me up ...

Returning to France after several weeks in Egypt, in a regional town, I collapsed. All the bugs in me just got too much. I managed to get to a park and lay there and slept for six hours. Then walked to the train station to catch a train to the town our hotel was in. I could only walk 50 metres without needing to sit for a rest to get to the train station. Next day after a good sleep in the hotel, I was recovered and fine! Amazing. No idea what happened.
