An ideal German double rifle scope?
      #387758 - 17/11/24 01:38 AM

A problem with modern German scopes is their huge size. Simply unbalancing on a double rifle, let alone on a dainty single shot. Even on bolt actions too big.

Unlike a close to true 1x on a big bore dangerous game rifle. A 4x, 5x, or 6x makes a very adequate upper magnification for large game and medium game. Even for small game.

One of these scopes looks to fit the bill. Though an illuminated reticle would be nice.

"The 1.1-5x24 model from the Stratos series is a very compact, elegant and light-weight scope for driven hunt or dynamic shooting. The reticle has an ultra-bright FlashDot in the second focal plane. The scope features an extra large 37.6 m field-of-view.

Those last 2 are quite large. The first one, a 1.5X to 5X should be about perfect. It is more power than needed for your double rifle imho & would likely be set at the low end, most of the time. Higher power is nice for testing loads.
When I first moved out "West" to where the BIG game is hunted, I had a 2X on my .458. That was all that was needed for shooting out to 200, even 300yards in my opinion. On steel plates, I did well with it and better on moose. Terrifically wide field of view and enough magnification for large game. I'm talking moose and deer. With it, 100yards on moose and 50 on deer. At that time I was stalking deer in the bush, following fresh tracks on trails. Rare to get a shot past 50, however did manage that with the little .375 M94 Winchester - with iron sights & a 300yard shot on a deer with a .45/70 - again, iron sights. LOL I could see then.

Most of the lads I hunted with used 4X or 3x9's set at 4X.
The only time I got into trouble with higher powered scope was with a 2.5-8X40mm on my 12 bore ball gun. Dang thing was on 8X when I needed a followup shot. Couldn't slide off the smooth grip safety with my gloves on (sliding, I had reloaded the fired tube) until I pulled off the glove with my teeth, then switched off the safety, by then the deer was gone. A too-high shot, perhaps a little far back. 3/4" hole on both sides. Got up and buggered off. Tracked it for 3 hours that day and for 2 hours the next. Didn't come up with the deer. I declared never again will I hunt big game with more than 4X on a scope. I even taped my daughter's 2.5-8X40 .260 at 4X and have the 3-9X40 on my .375 set at 4X.
My air rifles have 6-20's - LOL.

I have a Kahles - it fits the bill (I had to put on a leather pad to raise my eye tho):

https://www.kahles.at/en/hunt/riflescopes/helia-1-5x24i

Among great field of view and a true 1x magnification it has a "Automaticlight" that (tilt sensor) detects whether or not the rifle scope is in a shooting position and transmits this information immediately to the illumination unit. This unit automatically switches the illuminated reticle on or off when not in use, in order to save valuable energy.

As with any scope on double rifle it gets in the way when extracting/reloading cartridges tho...
