A Rare 9.5mm cal. Peterlongo Take-Down Mauser - cased

I wonder if anyone else saw this at auction this weekend. Its the best Peterlongo I have ever seen. The 9.5 caliber is actually a .375 caliber - but not sure if its a 9.5x57, or a 9.5x60 cartridge, or ?? ... anyone with info on what this caliber might be, please chime in. And .... its on the way to join its big brother here in Wisconsin.

as always, your comments are most welcome.

this is a fantastic rifle, could be anything from 9,5x56 Mannlicher Schönauer to 375 H&H. I never heard of a 9,5 Peterlongo but he had some special cartridges so maybe. Could be also a 9,5x73 Miller& Greis or 9,5x66 Vom Hofe?
Peterlongo in Innsbruck allways had an offer for the africa hunter.

Is that a chamber cast sitting in the case?
The 9.5X73 M&G is much like a 404 necked to .375 but the 9.5X66VH looks something like that cast.

Buck, were you at the auction?

Swell rifle!

I'm anxious to get it in hand .. it will be a couple of weeks .. I found that the IAA forum discusses and shows a 9.5x60 Peterlongo cartridge, which looks like a shorter version of the 11.2x72 Schuler, except in 9.5 mm caliber - which is a .375 dia. bullet. Hope it turns out to be such, as I have plenty 11.2x72 Schuler brass that I can form into 9.5x60.

Certainly a bit of confusion in regards to the calibre it even could be from reading the cartridge info, referring possibly to 9.3, 9.4 as well 9.5 might be best to even slug your bore Buckstix!
Hope it turns out what you hope it is, it will be a fair thumper considering if its based on a shortened 11.2x72mm case!
Lovely piece of kit there mate, & you'll have to make up another label for the case that it comes in!
Got a few challenges yet to accomplish!

Congrats Buckstix. I saw the listing for the rifle and thought that it was a very nice kit. I live in West Earl, PA not far from the auction house.

Interesting purchase. I love cased Mauser takedowns. They look very perfect in their cases.

It will be interesting to see what cartridge chambering your "lucky dip" results in? I'd like to see one of the bigger boomers mentioned.

Buckstix, I'm interested in your sunroom. Do you have a series of safes? A large underground bunker man cave gun room lined with open racks and leather furniture? Gun cases piled up in the corner, and leaned up against walls and corners? I doubt the latter, from such an organised enthusiast.

Hello All,

I got the rifle in hand yesterday and I couldn't be more pleased. The rifle is a 9.5mm Peterlongo caliber. A .375 dia bore. I have shown the proof stamps that I found on the barrel and hope someone can explain their meaning. I also show 5 cartridges that I loaded and a case label I made for the rifle's case, I used the chamber cast to get the cartridge dimensions. Its rebated case made from 375 H&H brass with the belt removed and the head rebated. They are loaded with a fire-forming load of 56g of IMR4064 and a 235g Speer bullet.

UPDATE:

Back from the range today. Here is the results of firing the 5 loaded cartridges. see target below. This first outing was with fire-forming loads. According to loading data for the 376 Steyr, shown in the book, African Dangerous Game Cartridges, by Pierre van der Walt, I assume the 9.5 Peterlongo cartridge will be capable of matching the performance of the 376 Steyr, which is capable of 2870fps with a 235g bullet, 2600fps with a 270g bullet, and 2500fps with a 300g bullet.

Also shown is a comparison of different cartridges and their case capacity in terms of grains of water.

375 Whelen .... 74.5g H2O
9.3x62 Mauser ..... 74.8g H2)
9.5x60 Mauser ..... 78.2g H2O
376 Steyr ..... 79.3g H2O
9.5mm Peterlongo ..... 84.0g H2O
9.3x74R ..... 84.2g H2O
375 Taylor ..... 87.9g H2O

Do you have the capacity in gr. of water to fill the case to the mouth?
I don't know what the .376 Styer capacity is, either.
My own .375/06IMP is 78gr. with RP or Fed. brass and 80gr. with WW brass.
Mine is more of an Arch chamber, rather than the slightly smaller Ackley Chamber.
You supposed ballistics are easily achieved in my .375, however, I only run the lighter 235's at 2,840fps.
Even that is just over 4,200fpe.

Looks like she can shoot alright!
Can you put up the cartridge dimensions if possible please Buckstix, a most interesting cartridge you have there, based on the 11.2x72 case!
Case capacity from Quick Load for the 9.3x64mm is 88gn of water so your 9.5 is only slightly smaller, puts it right between the .376 Steyr & the 9.3x64mm!
It'll have some zing alright

Dah ...... read my last post ...

Not based on the 11.2x72 case .. somewhat similar to the 11.2x60 case.

these measurements are taken from a chamber cast and measuring fired-formed cases.

overall length = 2.350"
base diameter = 0.512"
shoulder diameter = 0.495"
rim diameter = 0.475"
rim thickness = 0.050"
neck length = 0.335"
neck diameter = 0.405"

Sorry, missed that. 85gr. is about the same as the 2.5" magnums, .338 anyway. I see the .375 Taylor is higher by 3gr.

I measured my 9.3x62 as well as a client's 2 Sako cases fired in the Styer rifle, and both batches came out exactly 78gr., same as my .375/06 IMP cases, for RP and Fed cases.
The "book" says 9.3x62 has a .451" shoulder, however my Oberndorf and the client's Styer both measure .454" on the fired case. That is the same measurement of Ackley's IMP cases. Of course the shoulder angle is different for Ackley's versions.

Hello all,

As mentioned in a prior post, I made cartridges for my newly acquired rifle in 9.5 Peterlongo caliber by modifying 375 H&H brass. It took me 20 hours to make 25 pieces of brass. For those that may be interested, and those that may need to make custom cases, the following captioned pictures tells the process of how I made them.

With my .375/06, I found H4895 to be a superlative powder in the 'stable' powders, right up to 300gr. bullets. Still do.
BLC2 also worked well ballistically, but not as temperature stable as the Hodgdon/ADI powders.

yes, it looks like the 11,2x60 Schüler was the inspiration for this unknown proprietary cartridge,
you have maybe an absolute single rifle. don't you have a tool for cuting the case on the lathe? I will make you a pic, its very simple.

Great post showing all the steps in photos. About an hour per case. That's a substantial investment in time. If using the rifle for hunting, not would be quite painfull to loose a case in the grass!

It's great to see such a rare chambered rifle brought back to life and usable again by one of our knowledgeable and skilled members.

If you don't mind, I'm going to share the lengthy image to thevNEVFB page and groups. We need to get some new members joining here. Perhaps some might join to learn from it add to our members substantial knowledge base.

Certainly a labour of love Buckstix - well done getting your new baby going!
Many thanks for explaining your case forming & reloading techniques, it will be a Godsend for anyone else who has this cartridge or something similar to use the same techniques to get the job done.
Amazing job
