Where to find brass for 450 BPE
      #387319 - 20/10/24 12:11 PM

My double rifle project has been put on the back burner for a while.
I saw an old 450 BPE for sale but I am resisting buying it
because of the lack of brass. What are my options for obtaining
Brass? I saw a 470 NE but passed on it for the same reason.
Thanks
Nick

450 BPE is the same case as the 450 NE cartridge case. Measure your rim thickness, apparently there are thin (~.040") and thick (~.060') versions. My Thomas Hepplestone 450 BPE double uses the thin rims and the brass I have is head stamped Jamison.

We've had some charming fraudulent actors pop up here in the US to take advantage of the shortages on reloading components that started in 2020. The site reloadingbrass-usa.com is supposed to be one of those scams.

While it seems that 450NE loaded ammunition from Hornady may be coming back, I haven't seen brass yet. I check availability every month or so. As stated above, the NE and BPE brass is the same, although sometimes rim thickness will get you.

Stalk gunbroker for brass. It does show up. Nice thing is that with black powder loads, it should last a very long time.

CJF is correct, scam site, zelle payment only. Don't do it.

I have 450NE brass and would sell some to you.
Shoot me a PM if you get the gun and need brass.

Nick/fiatcrew,
As mentioned before, ,450 3 1/4" BPE and .450 3 1/4" NE are the same case. Be aware that back in the BP Express days the chambers were not standardized and brass sized in modern spec reloading dies possibly may not fit in an early BP Express rifle.

The .470 brass is relatively easy to find, the .450 does take some diligent search and lucky timing.
If you do not already have them, the reloading dies are another issue. Once again .470 NE are not THAT difficult to source, but the .450 3 1/4' can be scarce.

BTW: I personally know Huvius (Ben) and he is honest to deal with and a great guy. No worry buying brass from him.

Have fun and good luck.

Sage advice. It is worth while to cast the chamber and slug the bore. Don't take anything for granted.
