Walter Locke & Co, Calcutta 577 EX double rifle - Jones Under-Lever

I recently saw a note on the forum that said "577 Express Double in Classified" ... I looked, but it wasn't there. After a few private messages to the seller, I had it coming to Wisconsin. I jumped on this because I was missing a 577 in my double rifle family, because I sold my 577 ex a couple years ago. The rifle arrived today, and a quick chamber cast shows it has 2-3/4" chambers. (shown next to a loaded cartridge) The gun was fully restored with new wood and a fresh coat of rust-blue. Both wood and metal are 100%, showing little or no use after restoration. Most of the light factory engraving has been muted from the restoration. I may leave it as is, or have a local engraver freshen it, but for now its just fine for shooting.

Specs are:

Unknown maker w/ British Proofs
Jones Under-Lever
Back Action Locks
Rebounding Hammers
30" barrels - full matted rib
1 standing, 2 folding rear site, marked 100, 200, 300
brass bead front site
10 pounds 12 ounces
14" LOP
Metal Butt Plate
sling swivels

and ..... its now cased with an appropriate case label

as always, your comments are most welcome.

Buck, I’m glad to see that you finally rejoin the .577 Express brotherhood.

Nice classic rifle and hope it will be a good shooter.

Hello, I assume the stock maker had more experience making shotgun forends than double rifle forends. If I had the skill to make it look as good as it does now, I would give it a try to make a splinter forend. But I don't, so I'll have to live with it as is.

If it were mine, Buckstix, I would simply book it in with a sympathetic stock-maker to have the foreend "splintered" at some point in the future. Only then could I live with it as is!

BTW just curious about your excellent rendition of a Walter Locke trade label in the other thread, showing Lahore as the address, when the seller's advert says Calcutta.
What's on the barrels?
A Walter Locke-retailed Type B Oberndorf Mauser in my gunsafe says Calcutta, Lahore & Delhi.

Man, you are going to have a bunch of fun with this rifle, especially in the light of your experiences with the previous .577.
I have posted on here a million times that the .577 x 2 3/4 is my favourite cartridge by a country mile, from Samuel Baker's original heavy BP loads to the excellent light nitro and N for B loads developed since Wrightie's publications, and that remains my choice to this day.

Congratulations mate!

Hello, The barrel rib is marked "WALTER LOCKE & Co., CALCUTTA. 7 ? oo." - I can't make out the last markings after the word CALCUTTA because the ages have deteriorated the detail. Perhaps an inventory number? any guesses?

As for my case label, the closest illustration I found on the Internet had the Lahore name, so I used it as found.

I have read many of your 577 posts over the years - very informative - I thank you. I'm also unsure of the British maker of this double. I know that Walter Locke was only the retailer. any guesses?

Hi Buck,
I'd surmise the rifle was made by W&C Scott, especially with the Birmingham proof marks. The "EX" (.577 EX) proof mark for Express rifles came along in December 1887, so call your rifle 1888 or later.
Walter Locke & Co. had presence in Calcutta, Lahore, Delhi, & Kidderpore.

Hello,

I too was guessing W&C Scott. When questioned about the date made, I suggested 1888.

I wish the stockmaker that did this would have signed his work. The wood to metal fit around the locks and tangs, and at action, are absolutely flawless. Details of a Master stockmaker for sure.

Mike:
I have not seen reference to Kidderpore in the Walter Locke catalogues or on their gun-barrels, and would assume the Calcutta reference includes that inner suburb.
Just curious: have you seen it listed separately on a trade label or in a catalogue?
My friend (who collects maharajah guns) and I have a bit of a dossier on Indian gun-makers and would be pleased to include this address if possible, with a reference. Hope you can help.

With apologies for the sidetrack.

Tony:
I have pictures of some trade adverts from the day that reference Kidderpore. Seems a large shop space for Locke's workshops and foundry that supported his electrical & mechanical engineering operations.

Imgur not cooperating right now, shoot me a PM with your email addy and I can forward the pictures.

Mike:
Thanks for the clarification, most grateful for any additional info on the fascinating subject of Indian gunmakers/retailers during the Raj.

PM sent.
