Mauser 6.5x57mm
      #386350 - 15/08/24 05:18 AM

Just bought this rifle. What do you think?

https://intersurplus.com/collections/6-5x57/products/mauser-98-in-6-5x57

They also have a couple Mausers in 8x57 at good prices. One has the claw mounts. Both have double set, double throw triggers.

I was actually looking at a couple 6.5 Creedmoors today on the used rack. $1,500 and up. LOL
Skeleton rifles. The do NOTHING for me.
The Mauser needs a re-finish. I even have a appropriate finish. LOL
Kinda excited now. I need to buy some 57mm brass now, it seems.
6MM Rem, 7x57 or 8x57 will do just fine.

Yeah, I am becoming more pleased with it all the time.
This will be my 4th 6.5.
2 6.5x55's
1 .260 Rem
1 6.5x57

I expect it will about duplicate my .260 Rem with it's 26" bl.
They should be close.
The rifling twist may or may not be a surprise, though.

I also have quite a few 6.5's

1 6.5X54 MS
4 6.5x53R

Twist rate could be 1-200mm so certainly good for heavier projectiles.

I am hoping it is fast & not set for the 93gr. Norma 'match' FMJ. I have some of those in factory 6.5x55's. They shoot amazingly well in the Vargerber.

Nice rifle Daryl. And the 4x32 Swarovski is a nice scope. What reticle I wonder?

A 140 gr is a normal bullet weight. A 120 to 127 gr faster. A 160 gr might work well.

What's the plan with the 6.5x57?

Our whitetail deer primarily. I'm about done hunting elk and moose. Too bloody heavy. I've wondered about the reticle myself. Whatever it is, I will get used to it.
Of course if a wolf presents itself, it will be dead soon.
The trapping association here in B.C. put a bounty of $500.00 for a wolf, and had to quickly stop as people actually targeted the bastards where they were abundant.

Daryl congrats on a great buy! It looks to me like a Suhl mauser, with the double set triggers, claw mounts and the stock design. Did it say any name on the barrel/action? They use to put the name of the specific rifle builder on the barrel.
Re the 65x57... it is to me one of the better 6.5 calibers! I have 2 rifle in this caliber. A Brno 21 and a Mannlicher. The Brno shoot sub moa with any bullets or powder combination from 123gr Lapua to 160gr RN hornady bullets! The MS I still have to load for. What make the 6.5x57 a better option for me, is the longer case! I can play around with seating depth and the magazine box is never a problem with longer bullets. I load mine to the same velocity as the 6.5x55 swede.
I dont know why the 6.5 creedmore is so popular??? To me there is better 6.5's that are over a 100years old!!
Currently I have the following:
6.5x54MS x 2
6.5x55 x1
6.5 x57 x2
264 Win mag (this is a beast)

I must say the InterSurplus website is amazing! Did you saw the Brno ZG47 in 8x64 Brenneke??
Can someone please buy that rifle!!

I think so too. I will take possession this coming Thursday.
I did see the 8x64 listed and was thinking of it first, however I don't hunt moose noe elk any more, so the 8mm's would be somewhat overkill for me.
I went back to the 6.5x57 as I've always thought that calibre made sense, even back in the 1960's when I started with a 6.5 Rem. Mag. with 20" bl. I figured a 6.5x57mm with a 24" bl. would about duplicate what the Mag. did in its stubby bl.
I used it with 100gr. HP Speers at about 3,200fps on Ontario woodchucks out to 400yards. I had one of the earlier 2 lens range finders. My shooting buddy Warren used to say: "Your shot Daryl. Let's see how high you can lift this one"

I have a nice Model 21 BRNO in 6.5x57 that I use as my deer rifle. Great calibre, and has worked well for me lately. 2 trips away, 2 deer. 1 x Fallow and 1 small Chital, both for eating not trophies.

I've a lot of safevqueens 6.5mm s.

My Mauser M03 barrel in 6.5x65 RWS. I wanted a 650 mm 6.5x68 barrel though.

The Dutch Colonial Steyr 1895 (?) in 6.5x53R featured in a thread on these forums and historical information exportly researched by Lancaster I think it was. Correction, it was Rothammer. It was supposed to be the basis of a custom sporting rifle. Maybe not now? Need magazine charging clips for it.

Another custom sporting rifle project. The Greek 1900 Mannlicher already sportised. 6.5x54mm. Schutzen stocked. Need brass or ammo for it.

The 6.5 mm I've used is the Swedish 6.5x55 M96/M38 sporterised, barrel cut off, plastic stocked, scope and mounts added. 400 FMJ rounds in my storage. Factory ammo available. Extremely accurate accurate. A $400 rifle that exceeds anything a POS Creedmoor $8000 rifle can do. Shot a few deer, goats, other critters with it, I actually acquired it mostly as a "loaner" rifle for visitors.

Funny regarding a 6.5x57, I've another bolt action lightweight carbine I've often thought as being ideal as a 6.5x57. Zero intention of getting a x57mm. But I think the Mauser titles are more versatile than the the Steyrs, being able to have a wider variety of projectile choice. From 93 to 160grs, Spitzer to round nose.

I've always regarded the 6.5mm as being a far better choice than the once very popular .243/6mm. Better bullet weights. Better SD and penetration. Still mild. If only a 6.5mm was legal for sambar in Victoria.

A 6.5x57, 6.5x55, 54, 53R, a great choice.

I bought up a large lot of ammo which turned out to be 'click-bang' at best. I have been disassembling them for components and have a large number of clips. Can I get them from the US to Australia? I'd be happy to share...

Oh, for the record, I have several 6.5's...x53R, 6.5-06, .260 Rem, 6.5 Grendel, .256 Newton, x55 all come to mind. This thread has me thinking on x57's now...

Sending the clips to Australia is no problem as far as importing into Australia. I have imported a lot of those clips with zero issues, I did however first check with Customs and they confirmed there are no problems with those clips.

Exporting out of the US may be a different kettle fish.

Back to the 6.5x57. Just arrived, unboxed and better than I thought from the photos. Happy Camper.
Terrific trigger, bore looks new and bolt face appears not shot a lot. Ran a nylon brush down the bore with Ed's Red, waited
a few minutes followed by a tight patch - came out with a bit of brownish dust is all. Next patch spotless.
The stock looks as if it might have gotten wet a few times, but that's it.
Scope has windage adjustable rear base and is of the 3 heavy post reticle with blunt-ish pointed one in the middle.
Sharp and clear.
Now to find brass for it. Local store had none and I have to wait for my bro to come back from the lake with my wallet. I forgot it there.
Can't buy anything, let alone brass. Gun fits well. I really like the heads-up stance when shouldering the rifle, yet a good chunk of jaw &
cheek rests on the cheek-piece.
9" ROT.
