sticky stock Browning with broken Talley rings
      #386138 - 01/08/24 12:47 PM

I bought a used Browning X-bolt stainless stalker in 325WSM about 10 years ago. It has Talley light weight (alloy) rings. It shoots consistently outstandingly (three quarter MOA) surprisingly given the skinny barrel profile.

The top rear Talley ring cap snapped not long after I got it, and before I knew the Talleys had a reputation for breaking, so I bought another identical set of Talleys (was on the shelf in the store at the time) and swapped them out thinking I now had a spare. Having not fired it in almost 2 years I pulled it out of the safe the other day and discovered the top rear ring had again broken, so replaced it with the spare - we'll see how long that lasts.

I also discovered the dreaded sticky stock syndrome that the Browning Duratouch finished synthetic stocks suffered from. I know Browning will swap out the stocks free of charge in the US but you have to return the entire rifle sans optics and mountings. Browning are handled by Winchester here in Australia so I wasn't sure how easy it was going to go that route, or if being secondhand might make warranty different.

Anyway I gave the Duratouch removal a go myself. I tried metho and then acetone on the easier sections of the stock but it wasn't all that effective. I then tried isopropyl alcohol and it worked really well, along with a nylon scour pad and firm effort. It only took a couple of hours and I was being fussy to remove it from every nook and cranny.

The source of the isopropyl alcohol was a bottle of sanitiser that we had been required to take to the rifle range as part of the conditions during covid restrictions. The bottle is largely unused as it was primarily used for public appearance purposes only. Apparently it's only 70% isopropyl alcohol and the rest is nice smelling moisturiser or something like that. So now my stock is smooth, smells nice and is moisturising for my hands.

My go-to for sticky rubber armour is Isocol, the isopropyl alcohol in the green squirt-bottle with the cool croc label.

Doesn't moisturize my hands though...

Never seen Talley's break? Had them peen up in the rails where I couldn't stop them moving on a Brno ZKK & that was in 7x64!
I have a few different QD rings, never had any issues except for that problem until I got the correct set with the rear leg peg to stop everything from moving.

What are you going to redo your stock with M&9?
Marrakai has me rather worried about his moisturizing habits - if that stuff takes off stock varnish.........YIKES!

Ah yes the Browning sticky stock syndrome where half the hunting area vegetation comes home with you.

Rubbing cooking oil into the stock helps restore the Duratouch feel for a while but is not permanent. I put up with it on my X-Bolt 7mm WSM until it got the better of me and I decided to strip the Duratouch and refinish the stock. Spray can of Goof-Off, a small smooth edged steel spatula, a green scouring pad and hot water. Removed the recoil pad and sprayed stock with Goof-Off which jellyfied the Duratouch. I then scrapped off the gunk with the spatula and the scouring pad while standing the stock in a sink with some hot water which I could soak the pad in, keeping hot water away from the factory bedding compound.
When I finished the stock had a nice matt finish to it, like a very fine sandpaper, but looked horrible, patches of white in places. Once thoroughly dried I used a spray can of quick drying black semi-matt urethane paint to spray on the stock and used a lint free cloth to wipe the paint into the stock surface before it dried. Wiped on a couple of coats.

The 'chequered' panels came up glossy with a nice contrast to the rest of the stock with a semi-matt finish. Hard to describe the surface, not rough but nice to hold and not slippery in the wet.
Was very pleased with the overall job.

Not a close up but good looking stock finish on the Browning.

Barry, the Talley rings in question are the alloy Lightweight Alloy rings, not the steel rings which never give any trouble.

Good to know to never touch them. Tally have a good reputation with many people, but obviously a reputation built on the steel rings.

I've never used them. I've always used Warne/Kimber QD mounts.

This sticky stock syndrome ... Now I understand my 30 plus year old duffel bag. It's hine mildly sticky on the inside. Partuculsrly on the inside of the front outside pockets. Was planning to hot soapy wash it out and then air dry. But I see it's probably some waterproof coating on the inside of the synthetic "canvas". I think real tightly woven canvas would be far better.

Just like I'll stick to my non sticky beautiful walnut stocks than sticky plastic melting stocks.

PS Amazing these so called durable stocks deteriorate so quickly.

It turned out really well and I'll leave it as it is - it looks like I bought it that way. The finish is smooth and semi-sheen, and now matches the magazine plastic floorplate exactly. There is a slight scuff on the LHS buttstock where I went a bit gung-ho with the first attempts with metho, acetone and the scour pad, but it's very minor.

The finish is the mixture circled on the bottle:

Original busted Talley for reference (the recent one that broke did so in virtually the same place as this. The recent breakage unit was black, hence the colour mismatch now):

Why it didn't break in the skinnier part of the ring I don't know.

I believe the stock material is fine and durable (I guess we'll see), it's just that Browning had an issue with the Duratouch coating. In all fairness they stepped up to the plate, took responsibility and replaced the stocks free of charge (at least in the USA). I mean they did what they should but it's becoming less standard behavior these days, especially in the car industry.

This rifle was a triple first for me:
- first stainless steel rifle
- first synthetic stock
- first Browning

I prefer timber and blued but at the time I was looking for a rifle specifically for "Plains Game" event of BGR and had an unfulfilled fetish for an 8mm Rem Mag - this was the next best thing that came up and was at a good price being secondhand. I wasn't expecting it to be as accurate as it is.

The break has started at the corner of the bottom of the counterbore for the screw heads.

Yes, I had a closer look at them again now.

The recent ring, however, did bust at the skinny part on both sides: (I've taken photos of the ring "rolled around" ie left side is always on the left)

Without trying to sound like a wise guy it looks as if they were maybe over tightened.

May well be the case. I've never been able to over tighten any steel rings to cause them to fail though.

mauserand9mm,

Thanks for posting. I had never heard of a sticky stork nor talley rings breaking.

I have a 2021 Browning X Bolt (7mm PRC) with aluminum Talley rings. So far, all is well and hopefully I don't experience what you did. I also recently put Talley aluminum rings on another rifle. I did tighten them fairly well (did not use a torque wrench, just feel of my hand tighten).

I had a Browning sticky stock issue last year. after a number of experiments, I can safely say that the absolute best solution is Cloudy Ammonia. It removes the sticky solution with amazing effectiveness and no residue, smells etc. I also used it on an Anschutz spotting scope that had the same problem.
