Greener single shot .360 Express
      #385996 - 24/07/24 09:46 PM

Good morning Gentlemen,

A good friend of mine has a nice Greener rifle, it seems an Henry Martini action but I'm not experienced in falling block or single shot rifle.
Rifle is in good Condition but we cannot understand which caliber it's chambering.
All we can read on the barrel is ".360 Express" and "Cordite 30gr, Ball 300 gr max".
Is it a .360 Express N.2?
Any suggestion before stepping into chamber casting?

Hope some expert can help.

Regards.

Doc.

I can't tell you anything about the cartridge, others here can.

I can tell you about the rifle itself. The rifle is not a Martini Henry. The Martini Henry is a Martini actioned rifle with a Henry Rifled barrel. Most often seen in the form of a British Military rifle. There are also commercial variations using the Martin action with Henry barrel.

You Rifle is a Greener-Martini Sporting rifle.

I have two with this style action configuration. They are my favorite pattern Martini's. One is Marked Greener and per Greener made in 1898, and chambered in .500 EXP. (577/500 No.2 Express.) The second is marked made for Rawbone and is marked for .303 ammunition. This one uses bullets that are .303 in diameter and not the .311 of the British .303 cartridge.

As I said others will have to comment on the .360 Express, but what little I do know it is in the range of what would make a good whitetail deer cartridge here in the US.

Wasn't that particular .360 Express similar or identical to the 9.3X57 Rimmed?
Something about that designation in a fine rifle triggered that memory.

The 360n EX is the designation for the 360 Express. There is a 360 BPE and a 360 Nitro express which are basically the same case. Check the rim thickness. The 360 BPE has a thinner rim. I believe the 360 NE 2 1/4" has a thicker (0.060") rim.

I think the 360 NE is also called the 9.3x57/360R and is based upon the 9.3x72R (E).

Both cartridges are excellent deer cartridge.

The 360 BPE ises either a 155 gr or a 190 gr bullet (rthough there are some loads with 300 gr bullets.

Brass can be bought from Buffalo Arms. My reloading dies came from CH4D.

Your buddy's rifle is very nice.

It’s a 360 2-1/4” NE
30 grains cordite and a 300gr bullet is the norm for that cartridge.

Your mate has a marvellous rifle there Doc!
So the 360 2-1/4 would be pretty close to perhaps the .38-55 then?

The 2 1/4" would be close to the high vel. .38/55 loading of 255gr. (Velocity wise)At 1,825 to 1,850fps, iirc.
Seems to.me, the .38/55 original load and subsequent smokeless loads duplicating the BP load, was a 255gr. at about 1,320fps.
The target shooters of the day, used 300 to 320gr. cast bullets in their target rifles.

Doc,

Your friend looks to have a very nice looking and somwell kept or restored Martini Greener rifle.

That 300 gr projectile at a reasonable velocity will handle Red stag, boar, fallo deer nicely at moderate ranges in your Italian forests.

Our NE members are a wonderful font of knowledge.

Looking forward to seeing the range report on this one Doc!
The Martini action is a pretty strong action so I reckon you should be easily able to get to the quoted figure in kuduae's catalogue snippet!

Beautiful rifle. I really like small bore sporting martinis and have several, but none in such a useful chambering as 360EX.

I’ve hunted whitetail deer with a little double rifle on 360 2 1/4” built for black powder loads. I used NfB loads based on the 38-55 and had a clean one shot harvest of a large buck last year. Bullet was a 193gr 0.366” bullet made by RWS in the past. I don’t know if they still make these but Lapua makes a 185 0.366” or 0.365” flat based spritzer that is very accurate in that rifle.

Brass is currently made by Bertram or you can cut down 9.3x72r brass ( not 9.3x74!). Dies are made by CH4D here in the U.S.

My understanding is the 360 express with a 2.25” case is the earliest, or one of the earliest center fire sporting cartridges and was loaded with everything from round balls up to the 300gr nitro load used by your friends rifle.

Hope you get it shooting and have a chance to report back.
