Cartridge case ID
      #384111 - 13/04/24 08:55 AM

Was visiting a friend and he was showing me a case he has for one of his 32-40's and was asking me what ti make of it. I did not know but he said he a has a few boxes of cases like this. I took a pic and said I would see what I could find out. So this is the case and the confusion comes from the domed head. So, domed head, what, why, when??. anyone know??.

some measurements / dimensions and a drawing would help a lot

The beveled case head on what looks like an 8mm Lebel case in the image is known as the Mauser A Base case head. As far as I know the beveled head originated from the 11mm Mauser black-powder cartridge and was not uncommon on a few other black-powder cartridge cases and those that transitioned to smokeless powder such as the 8mm Lebel. The Lebel case is tapered with curved case walls similar to what the image shows although camera angle maybe playing tricks here.

I don't know why the beveled head was used, perhaps came about because some very early metallic cartridge cases were two piece with a beveled rim swaged to the case cylinder to form the head and pocket for the primer.

They are just 32-40 cases and head stamped as such, same as any other 32-40 case except for the domed head.

That is entirely new to me. I've never seen a domed case head on a .32/40.
Can't help but wonder if it was an attempt to correct loose or sloppy headspace.

The case looks a bit like the Russian 7.62X54, going by the doomed head.

Here is a bit more definitive information from the book "Mauser Bolt Rifles". The 11mm Mauser cartridge for the original black-powder Mauser Model 71 rifle may have been the forerunner of the cartridges using the concave beveled case head.

LTK did your friends 32-40 cases have any manufacturer's name or other ID on the case or just the 32-40 calibre moniker? The cases may have been made from Mauser A Base basic brass and then stamped 32-40 although would still expect to see a manufacturer's on basic brass e.g. Bertram etc.

A beveled edge case (like a 30/40 Krag) may have been used in a Remington Hepburn due to the non-camming breach block. A friend with several Hepburns does the to help case/loded round feeding. feeding.
