In the SE USA, long shots are 75 yards because there is so much vegetation. You can see deer at a longer distance (well bits and pieces of teh deer) but there is too much vegetation in the way for a clean shot. The last deer that I shot was about 40 yards away. I initially saw him when he was probably 100 yds away and let him amble closer to where I could see a good kill shot. I shot him with my BSW in caliber 8x57IR.

Next year, I think I will hunt with a drilling to change the routine.

When I hunt with my wife's relatives on their land in western Maryland, there's a mix of terrain, none of flat! Typical Appalachian mountains, elev 2500-3000 ft. Short shots are 20 yards in the hardwoods and laurels. Firelanes can easily go 100yrds and the one open field (from a strip mining effort 40 years ago) has shots to 400 yards if one were good enough and so inclined, although in deer season, bucks avoid the open spaces.

This fall I'll either be back in Minnesota or up in Maryland. I don't have access to private land here in North Carolina, and to me it's worth the travel to have better control of who you're in the woods with when the light is coming up pre dawn.

Chris

Chris,

Your hunting land in both Minnosota and Maryland sound wonderful. I like hunting and just hiking in the Appalachian mountains and their foothills. The mountains and foothills are beautiful at sunrise. Of course, dragging a deer out of mountainous terrain can be hard work.

Does Maryland have a lot of deer and are they fairly large?

I believe that the Minnosota deer are generally much larger than those in Georgia.

Roy,

The Minnesota deer are much bigger than their warm country kin. Maryland is more like MN. I think the MN deer I was hunting, like what I used to hunt in Wisconsin, benefit from nearby farms as well.

I've been lucky to have friends and relatives with land -- and ATVs.

I have a Gaucher 9,3 x 74R double rifle, scoped with a Zeiss in a swing mount.. It is most accurate to 100m (and probably beyond) with RWS 291 grain EVO factory ammo..

93mouse, that looks like pretty open shooting under the trees. Congratulations on your hunt and your rifle.

93mouse,

That is a very nice looking hind and rifle. Nice shooting at 200m. Do you shoot off a rest or offhand?

Not many places around here to get 200 meters in the bush. Must be lots of small meadows?
We only get shots like that across a logging slash, & loft times further than I will shoot, but 200yards is quite doable.

Thanks guys - it was shot sitting from a small stand (1,5m from the ground) - it was early in the morning and group was moving from pastures to the woods - high beech forest - shot from the left side looking at the pic - tricky and a bit lucky but it worked

Just a note on the bullet - it is light (10g) - it shoots pretty flat and recoil is nowhere near the 19g TUG - it does have a weak side - it is very sensitive on thinnest obstacles - only for 100% clear shots. I have two scopes on Merkel - on the pic is S&B Summit 2.5-10x40 (light SAX bullets - for long shots),

the other is kahles 1-5x24i (heavier bullets for driven hunting) and I have to raise the comb so it falls inline with scope instantly (stock was meant for open sights) - sorry for the pic - it is not very tidy:

Thank you for sharing the pictures and your experiences. Please if it's not too much could you share a picture of what see while hunting? Something that shows the terrain and vegetation. Just so I can better visualize the experience.

Regards,
CJF

93mouse,

Thank you for sharing. Those are wonderful pictures. Your pictures look like those in top hunting magazines. You hunt in a very beautiful area.

Also thanks for the webpage for your videos. Very nice.

The 10 gram bullet is very light for a 9.3 The lightest bullets I see available inthe US are 185 gr (12g) bullets intended for target shooting and varmit hunting. Are the jackets on your 10g bullets fairly think so they don't disintegrate on larger animals?

Amazing photography 9.3M!
You could make fantastic calendars out of those shots alone!
That Merkel of yours certainly can do fantastic work - stabilise 10gm right up to 19gm (154-293gn) projectiles.
Versatile indeed!

I wasn't aware of 9.3mm bullets lighter than 232gr.
154gr. is amazing.

Kinda like the 6.5x55 factory Norma ammo with 93gr. FMJ bullets, that I found somewhere.

Wonderful pictures. I'll check out the videos too. I appreciate you sharing these.

Can you tell us more about the lightweight 9.3mm bullets? I am looking for a source for bullets under 200gr in 9.3mm; all we have here in the US for jacketed bullets are heavier ones over 250gr for the 9.3x74 and other high velocity cartridges. I need to feed older rifles in 9.3x72r and 9.3x57R/360 2.25" and both prefer 190gr and lower bullets.

You could get a 3-die set to reduce Sierra 200gr. FP .375's, down to .366".
These cast bullet sizing dies for this purpose are not on their web site.
They have to be ordered peace meal. Lee is aware some people are doing this so this makes it easier.

I made a single die to do this out of a .222 Rem. Pacific sizing die and my throating reamer for .375. It works perfectly. I tried to make another out of RCBS .222 Rem. dies for a fellow and it was not very successful. The one made on the sizer die failed, but the one on the seating die worked after a fashion. I do not remember why this was, perhaps die hardness or some other reason? I did not have to anneal the Pacific die, but did with the RCBS dies.

Chris,

You might look for Lapua 9.3 (.366) 185gr bullets. Graf carried them but have sole out.

Those Lapua bullets are a interesting option if ever in stock -- and in package qty less than the 500 shown at some places.

Daryl, it may be time for me to look at resizing again. Last I checked (6 months ago) all the .375 jacketed bullets under 200gr were out of stock.

At 9.3x72 velocities, cast bullets could be an option, but I don't know of any mould mfg'rs who make light weight 9.3 moulds.
Accurate moulds might be an option. They did a great job on the .515", 377gr. mould I ordered from them.

Accurate has leietally thousands of mold designs and will modify any. I bought one that casts a 177 gr 0.367 bullet that I use in my 360 EX.

I will use that bullet in my 9.3x74R for a light load (like a 38.55 HV load)

Buffalo has imported a 9.3mm 196gr bullet but the price is very high (well too high for me to want to buy them).

All,

For those in the States, Graf & Sons now has the Lapua 9.3 (.366) 185gr bullets in stock which should be good for light loads in your 9.3x74R or your 9.3x62 and for normal loads in your 9.3x72R.
