I'll try to smooth up the bore with a maroon pad this weekend. I really liked the consistency of the Old Masters Spar varnish. A standard wiping varnish recipe is 1:1:1 of varnish, BLO and mineral spirits.

I own a military Mauser as well as a Simson Suhl pre-war commercial model. The Mauser is a wonderful action that withstood the test of time. This Remington Lee is a very smooth action that is very nice. Personally, I think that The Steyr action is the best in regards to "feel". I don't want to upset any Mauser afficionados .... just my interpretation.

I should add that if my example is typical, the 1899 Remington Lee sporters retain the magazine cut-off typical of early Lee-designed infantry rifles.
It does not actuate until the magazine is removed, and hence can easily escape notice.
I was reminded of this when watching Ian's video on the 1899 military pattern linked from kuduae's post.

Love these things!

My 1899 Remington Lee doesn't have the magazine cut-off. I don't know if it was removed or that it never had one to begin with. I'll look closer this weekend. I can't date my rifle because it doesn't have a serial number. There are other reported examples that also left the factory without SNs.

I had an opportunity to take the Remington Lee out to the range yesterday. I had loaded up a ladders of IMR 4895 and Varget using Sierra 180 gr boattail spitzers. I also ran a couple loads of 180 gr lead flat-point and hollow-point using IMR 3031.
The hollow-point loads show some promise. I will do more work with this later.
The IMR 4895 loads were OK but not fantastic. The 36 gr load of Varget with jacketed bullets looks like a winner. This 4 shot group was done at 50 yards. Darn flier! I didn't take my chrono along. I'll need to reload more and hit the range again.

I see piles of venison in your near future.

Well done!

The 36gr. load of Varget appears to be in the 2,200fps range, according to Hodgdon's Annual Mannual.
They list a starting load of 37gr. Varget and Sierra 180gr. SP at 2,282fps @ 38,200CUP.
That 36gr. load looks like a winner to me.

For interest's sake, the maximum load listed for Varget is 41.0gr. at 2,440fps at 43,400CUP. Hodgdon is showing some loads giving PSI maximums and these are up to 45,700 as maximum.
A load of 41.1gr. IMR4064 shows a vel. of 2,400fps and a pressure of 45,700PSI.

I was happy with my outing. I'll take my Labradar along next trip. I enjoy working up loads for these old rifles. I just received my order of Hornady 220 gr round-nose bullets in the mail today. I put together 5 rounds using 40.0 gr of IMR 4350 to try out.
This rifle will be heading out into the woods this year.
